SOURCE: won't idle steadily

Check the rubber boot that joins the carby to the engine to often have seen the hose clamps over tightened therefore creating a split in the rubber letting to much air in giving the rough idle eventually you wont be able to start it at all (have a good thorough look inside an outside of boot doesnt take much)

SOURCE: 1989 tw200 yamaha won't start

G'day egdbcs . Ok.now lets see.You say good spark,so i'm presuming you are doing the old sight test.Try bending the arm on a know good sparkplug about 5-6mm,earth the plug and kick'er in the guts(crank it over)Be very carefull , high voltage danger. If there's still a good spark it's safe to say that there will also be a good spark under pressure in the combustion chamber, speaking of which you should also do a compression test, anything over 100psi should be ok. as i'm not to sure of the extent of the re-build,hopefully the valves were lapped and checked for straight and true and valve seals replaced,if you notice oil on the tip of the spark plug you could have a leaking valve seal or oil seal .Try putting a small amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber ,tighten up the spark plug ,install the plug cap and.......Yeah ..You guessed it ..."kicker in the guts".If all the abouve are correct and true it should fire up.If it runs for 5-10 seconds then stops you've got some sort of fuel starvation problem , could be dirt in the carb, blocked idle jet ,or air passage or even the needle could have come off it's clip, believe me with an old bike like yours anything could be worn and loose inside that carby. The only other thing to consider is the timing. There may be a good spark but is it happening at the right time inside the engine???. I'll leave it all in your capable hands EGDBCS.Hope this helps to solving your worries. Chow for now......Tilleydog..

SOURCE: 2007 yamaha virago won't start - replaced spark

it's not that your not gettin gas it's that the gas is not getting thru the carbs to the engine. your bike will probably start w/choke on and then die, your jets are clogged and happens to most bikes that are stored w/gas in the carbs.,,,clean them if you know how or take it to a trusted mech...good luck to you...Tim

SOURCE: 2001 Yamaha Banshee that won't stay running

If your jetting is too rich it will be extremely hard to kick start it and will most likely flood it from kicking.First thing i would do is pull the top of the carbs off (cable, slides and needles) and see which clip they're set at. If they are set stock which would be middle clip then lower the needle one clip. This will lean the mix out and should start up easier with no problems,The idle issue is most likely just off.If your fiance still has the TORS on it then on top of the carbs he will see 2 dime size and screws and wires as soon as he takes his seat off. While running he can turn each dime size screw in or out to adjust the idle. If it has a TORS elimator kit on it then he won't have all the junk on top of the carbs and it will be just a cable and round cap screwed directly on top of the carbs and the idle screws will be on the side of each carb (brass color screws with nuts to tighten) same thing...in or out to adjust the idle where needed.Hope this helps.

Motor will start with choke on but dies if you give it any throttle

Sounds like the carburetor may be dirty i.e. fuel bowl , or line. Clean fuel line and carb and see if that helps.

1995 Yamaha XV 250 Virago Is there a need to adjust the choke (start) cable? If so, how is it adjusted. I think I'm having a problem with my choke and was planning to replace the cable and starter...

The problems with a plunger style choke happen when the rubber on the bottom becomes deformed and does not seal or the spring does not push the plunger down hard enough, or the cap breaks so the plunger is not pushed down hard enough. If you put your finger over the hole and the bike runs properly your bike is running on choke. You have to block the hole deep inside the carb to shut off the choke. I assume the original problem was that the bike would not idle .If this is the case, take the carb apart remove the slow jet and clean the jet and the carb body out so fuel will flow at idle. This should fix your no idle problem.

WITHOUT ANY WARNING MY 2001 250 VIRAGO LOST POWER.SINCE THEN IT WONT RUN AT ALL WITHOUT THE CHOKE ON. AND THEN IT WILL ONLY IDLE. IF I TURN THE THROTTLE AT ALL IT WANT TO DIE. IT SEEMS LIKE AN AIR FUEL...

its running lean. make sure your fuel lines are are intact and check for anywhere else that the fuel system could be taking in air.by turning on the choke you are causing the system to run richer (by blocking the air) causing a higher fuel to air ratio but still not enough to keep the engine running under any demand. i am sure you will find something obvious since this started suddenly. good luck.

Last time I STARTED MY VSTAR 1100 I CHOKED IT FOR 10 SECONDS ON HIGH THEN MOVED TO MEDIUM CHOKE FOR 4 THEN TOOK OFF AT NO CHOKE. 2 WEEKS LATER. I started up bike Choke on high bike barely wanted to idle...

Sounds like your flooding it out with the choke out. Try the next time you go to start the bike when it's cold with the choke out and when it starts push the choke all the way in and keep it running with the throtle. If it runs better after doing this then your flooding it on start up. Use 1/2 choke to start cold and see what it does. Good Luck

The battery on my 1995 Yamaha Virago 250cc is not working

starter brushes could be worn out or a dirty or loose connection!
Starter button may need checking also the solenoid
week compressin or leaking diaphrams in carbs will cause it too
I suggest you charge battery & start at the button & work your way back

Have a 2001 yamaha 250 virago and it won't satrt,

You do have fuel in the tank? Pull fuel line from carburetor--turn fuel tap ON--fuel should run from line (into clean can or bottle). If none, the brass screen inside the tap body may be plugged. Remove screen and hold with pliers. Clean with carburetor cleaner from auto parts store. When you set choke, can you see anything happening? May have water in bottom of float bowl. Remove bowl to check (and clean).
