Tamoretti scooter maintenance

Last week my tamoretti 125cc switched off while the engine was running. Since that time it didn't start any more. I bought a new battery...the lights work but it doesn't start...it seems to be about to but it doesn't. The kick start seems not working...what shall I do? Most part of the mechanics around don't service this kind of scooter. thanks

Larry,

Many scooters use a special charger that will not overcharge the batteries. Your best bet is to run a long extension cord to wherever you are safely storing you scooter and use the on-board charger. Be sure to charge your batteries often, since they last a lot longer if you do not run them down too far.

I have the book if you can figure a way to post you email without getting too much SPAM. Be sure the charger is un-plugged, and that the free wheel lever is engaged.

Check the fuses too and basically all the wiring, there could be somewhere a loose connection also check the wires at the solenoid switch.

Could it be in free-wheel mode. Most Prides have a pull up knob at the rear of the scooter.

When i kick my scooter(vespa 125cc) off its ok if i stop and it cools down it wont kick off but if i bump it off it fires up ok

I don't know much about Vespa scooters but from what you're describing, your valves need adjusting. If the valve is standing open as little as one thousandth of a inch, you won't have enough compression to start the engine at kick starter cranking speeds. It will start when you push the scooter and bump it off. This is because you get a higher piston speed allowing the engine to start before the compression has time to bleed off. Check the valve adjustment, especially the exhaust valve.

MY 125cc 4 STROKE JUST CUT OUT FOR NO REASON, AND NOW I CAN,T START IT UP AGAIN! I MADE THE MISTAKE OF GETTING ONE OF THOSE CHEAP CHINESE SCOOTERS AND THE MANUAL IS IN PIGEON ENGLISH. THE ENGINE WILL TURN...

Even though I am unfamiliar with your bike I will give this a try on the condition that You give me a "Helpful" rating or better. Like you, I am unable to comprehend pigeon English.

A spark plug can go bad at any time. Get a new plug. Put the wire on the plug then ground the metal side of the plug against the cylinder head as you press the starter button. Look for the spark. If no spark, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it. Check the fuses. How good is the battery? Is the handlebar kill switch on? Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter.

Problem with running of scooter

Sounds like it is running too lean. Look for an air leak around the carburettor manifold.
