How to fix timing chain honda xr 200 model 1998

chains are not repairable only replace with new ! remove camshaft etc then cylinder head , then barrel and with the side cover etc removed then replace the chain ! tdc the piston when barrel back on feeding the chain up , fit head then fit cam with all valves closed and should line up to a mark on cam cog , fit chain then bolt the cam down , rotate the engine several times back to tdc and check valve clearences and refit all parts and change the oil !

Hi i have a 2003 honda vtr firestorm just wondering when cam chain and tensioner should be changed .Also at what intervals should bike be serviced.

Manufacturer recomeds tensioner @ 40k but please change them at 35k. My rear tensioner failed @ 40150 ks and two bent valves, valve stem seals, head gasket + the two 50$ tensioners + labour, i was back on the road.
as for the servicing i personally have been doing 5k oil and 10k oil and filter change. As long as the service intervals are with in six months apart i dont think you wil have a problem. If you dont do many k's change your oil at least once every six months-oil is cheap.

When does cam chain need checking on a 1998 vtr firestorm

hi as this runs on an automatic tensioner arangment there is no set time for checking, if the chain becomes noisy or you suspect early failure then this would be a good time,

Coughs out through carbies when changing gears

Get your valve clearances checked & adjusted, otherwise its a burnt-out or bend valve or somehow the ignition timing has moved (unlikely)

Good Luck
Hope this helps.

Loud tapping coming from the front of my vtr 1000

Some VTR1000's had a problem with the cam chain tensioner on the front cylinder. If this is left the chain can become so loose it skips a few teeth on the cam sprocket and bends the valves. If you can locate the tensioner, remove the centre screw with sealing washer from it, insert a small flat blade screwdriver in and run the engine. you will feel the screwdriver shake about if the tensioner has gone.

Bike had cam chain tensoner and 2 valves replaced, but bike is not running wll, seems to be low in compression, i am dropping gears in bends and the bike feels like an in line 4, just has'nt the same...

Check the valve lash (clearances). If not enough clearance, the valve(s) could be not fully seating which would create the problem you have described.
