2004 Suzuki DR-Z 125 Logo
Posted on Mar 04, 2009

I have a suzuki drz 125l 2004 model that currently has a ticking noise in engine. Bike runs well and has good power, but ticks one the less. Any ideas ?? I have mostly owned 2 strokes; therefore, I am not sure on 4 strokes.

Okay theres a couple possable things that can cause this .... carbon on the valves, ran hard, not frequent oil changes, low on oil, cheap oil, spark plugg is too long , too much oil somtimes causes this, crank case breather plugged,it all depends on the way it was treated in the past or the present
i change my oil about every 15-20 hours keeps debre down and less friction on engine, remember this is not water cooled! so use the best 10-40 oil or atleast good known oil and run some seafoam through the gas,it will take that carbon off . and if you dont have a inline fuel filter u should get one they really save carbs and there only $3.00 at oreily! hope this helps <walker>

This is nomal for a DRZ 125 because of the short piston skirt. You get much the same annoying sound on the 250/400's also, don't stress, thats just how it is.

I sometimes have upperend noise while idling, a tick tick tick noise, then gradually fades to a less noticeable sound. The bike has, 3,800 miles on it and had sat for a few years prior to my buying....

Have the valves adjusted. A ticking sound on the top end is almost always the valves tapping. I slight ticking sound is normal but if it's been sitting for a while it's good to have them measured anyway.

Hi I was draining the "oil" on my 2004 suzuki drz

it sounds as if you undid the oil pump plug and if you put everything back in as it came out you will be fine.

Why does my 2003 drz 125 have a ticking sound when i run it?

Also a four-stroke has the tendency to tick somewhat unlike the 2-stroke. If it seems too noisy or the ticking is more like a rattle have someone check your valves.

Loud tick noise in crankcase.

Thanks for the background info. With all the work that has been done and the good readings I can suggest a few possibilities.
  1. A broken gear tooth, (highly likely if the "tick" is not present in all gears).
  2. Broken gear tooth on the clutch hub, (highly likely if the "tick" is present in all gears).
  3. Wrong heat range on the spark plug causing detonation.
Set the air screw and pilot screw back to factory settings > turn each inward until LIGHTLY seated. Now open each of them one and one-half turns. The stock jetting should be okay.

Gas Mileage for 2005 Suzuki DRZ400S

40-50 depending on how you drive it and where you go. Hard riding off road less mileage. Street riding taking it easy better. Check out www.drz.info for some good tips on the DRZ. Also www.thumpertalk.com under the DRZ section is great info and more than you ever wanted to know about your bike. I'v had mine for 2 years now and love it. If your going to go off road at all get diffrent tires. The stock death wings are dangerious off road. Good choice in bikes.
