Rear wheels seem to drag in reverse gear

I have an awd merc mountaineer 2004 and when i put it in reverse sometimes it seems like the rear wheels lock up and i have to really mash the gas to move it. i noticed one day that i did not fully disengage the emergency brake after driving all day.

SOURCE: 2004 Mercury Mountaineer Emergency Brake Adjustment

Greetings larslabs,
My name is Dennis and I can assist you to finding your parking brake adjustment location.
1) the adjustment is located so that you have to remove your center console floor finish panel (this is the drink holder).
2) raise your parking brake lever and gently pry the plastic tabs from the center console.
3) Once you can see the park brake lever you will see a nut that is turned to adjust the lever so that it has 5 clicks when it is applied.
Glad to be of assistance and thank you for using FixYa. Please rate the solution because I can learn from your rating (and it keeps my rating up to date). Thank you, Dennis

If the vehicle is made to be a AWD you cannot get it out of AWD unless you take off the front drive shaft

Durango AWD

The vehicle is always in AWD and that cannot be altered . There is a 3rd diff in the gear box that allows independent operation of the front and rear wheels to prevent drive line wind up . When you select 4WD you lock up that 3rd diff so that both front and rear axles have to turn. This results in drive line torque wind up so the vehicle must not be driven in this mode on hard surfaces as there is no means for the wheels to slip and relieve the torque wind up . To loose the wind up reverse for several yards and any actuators that are trying to move will be able to or drive on slippery surfaces to allow the wheels to slip

My 2002 mercury mountaineer have no problem going forward but it seen like when i put it in reverse the back wheel lock and it out out a funny smell

It sounds like you have a loose brake shoe inside one of your rear axle brake drums. You will have to remove the rear wheels and brake drums to find out for sure.

Rear wheels not spinning. Front wheels spin when in 4 drive.

Hi First of all check the adjustment on the rear wheel thats sticking sometimes the brake pad comes away from the metal it is fixed to this maybe the case on your vehicle, the make & year of vehicle would help further but I a sure you got something to check now. Please leave me feedback, Malcolm Campbell.
