SOURCE: need instructions on removing back tire on Harley

I worked as a PDI @ riders in b'ham for a while and had to change a few rear wheels, the 1st thing is to deflate the tire then use a coat hanger wire that is strait. Place the wire @ the center of the axel bolt head and then following the swing arm up to the center of the swing arm bolt head, then use a zip tie to mark the coat hanger. Then move to the other side and check to seeif they are the same . They should be. Then move to the disc break and remove the calliper, do not remove the break line. Once you do this you can loosen the axel nut. I assume you have the back tire off the ground, so now you can move the wheel to the front and remove the drive belt. now you can remove the axel and drop the wheel down and out . do this opposit to put it back on remember to use your coat hanger to reset your tension on the drive belt , hope this was helpfull.

SOURCE: Fuel line hose came undone from bottom of carb.,

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A fuel feed hose would enter the carbs either from the top or the side. Any hose attached to the carb from the bottom would be a drain hose. Being a drain hose, it is only connected at one end (bottom of the carb) and is free on the other. Normally, there would be a drain screw very near where the drain hose enters the bottom of the carb. The purpose of the drain screw and hose is to allow removal of contaminated, stale fuel or flushing of rust, sand from the carb bowl.

Hope this be of help/idea. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

2005 sportster 1200 carburater not getting fuel

1. remove the full line from the carb, turn on the petcock and watch it flow into a container. Make sure that the petcock is in the correct position and that the tank has at least a half tank of gas. If the petcock does not flow gas, the tank/petcock has a fuel flow issue. If the petcock has a smaller rubber line connected (vacuum controlled) to it, it will need vacuum applied to it before it will flow fuel. Vacuum can be applied using a hand held vacuum tool (purchased at a auto store) or light suction from the mouth will do.

2. If the petcock does flow fuel, remove the inlet to the back of the carb and spray a 1-2 second burst of starter fluid into the carb and attempt to start it. If it attempts to start after spraying it with starter fluid, the carb is plugged and needs to be cleaned.

Changed the ignition on 1996 sportster xl1200c now it dies out when i start of in first and in second like its not getting any gas

Well, pull the fuel line loose from the carb, put it in a catch can, and spin the engine. The '96 and later Harley's have a vacuum operated petcock if it is still stock. It gets vacuum from the intake maniold or backside of the carb through a small vacuum line. The hose plugs onto the backside of the petcock. If you're not getting any vacuum or the diaphgram in the petcock is damaged, you won't get any fuel to the carb.

Also, try loosening your fuel cap. Don't take it completely off just good and loose. If the fuel tank vent in the cap is plugged, a vacuum will build up in the fuel tank quickly and stop the flow of fuel.

Are you sure you have your ignition system timed and wired correctly?

Gas is streaming out of my overflow line.

I don't work on Harleys but I know it is a stuck float when the gas flows. The following is what I tell the Japanese bike owners.

This is a carb float being stuck open. Turn off the gas and drain the offending carb(s). Next, turn the gas back on and sharply tap the float bowl with the plastic handle of a screwdriver as the fuel bowl refills. The goal here is to vibrate the float to free it up. If doing this process a couple of times doesn’t free the float I would remove the offending carb(s) and clean with a spray carb cleaner. By the way, the float itself could be bad > filled with gas instead of air. Clean the air filter then re-mount carb(s).

Please rate this solution. Thanks!
