Is it the illumination lights? If so, that sounds like a bad headlight switch-when you put the park lights on (first click), it turns on the dash illumination lights.
If it is warning lights or other lights on the dash, it could be a bad ignition switch.

SOURCE: 1994 oldsmobile died while idling

Take a battery that has a good charge on it or 12 volts put it in and start it then take a multimeter and put the red lead on to the power lead on the back of the alternator and ground the black lead.It should read between 13-14.5 volts anything more or less replace alternator. If alternator checks out ok check battery voltage after charging it.Must have at least 12-12.6 volts anything less replace battery.

SOURCE: Dashboard goes on and off. Won't start.

Same problem on Buick Reatta and Riv's The most common problem lies in the connection at the battery, The large positive terminal often doesnt tighten up.to provide a good constant contact one thing I found is to use a longer bolt with lock washers. The flickering of the dash is associated with this anad there may be a loose connection behind the dash itself, The electronic dashes of that era were hypersensitive to changes in the current, Make sure that all of the connections at the battery are tight. Also did you check the alternator for proper operation?

SOURCE: How do you replace dashboard lights in a 1983

You'll need to remove the entire dash cluster. Not an easy job on that model. Everything comes out the front BUT you'll need to remove the dash pad, drop the steering column, disconnect the speedometer cable and the wiring harness and a few other things that I can't remember right now. Hidden screws are the biggest problem GM likes to hide them in the most unusual places. BE CAREFUL. Plastic breaks easy on these older models.
If ALL the lights are out, it may be a bad connection at the back of the dash. If it is a few, then look for blackened bulbs.

Dear Chris,

If you know about automotive motor or cars, you can analyze it self what is going on your cars and if you don't know about it, for this cases there is a lot of possibility causes.

For a little hints to start the car engine, you can check .
- Check car power batteries, if you can turn the car light on or you can see the indicator light panel on dashboard with battery indicator, that mean your battery fine, if the light indicator become blink and die, that mean your battery almost die, that become the battery unable to start the engine. That's all.
For the rest problem n cause, you can go to repair car services, they can analyze all the possibility on your car.

1983 olds 98, looking for blower motor relay. blower turns on when hooked to battery but doesn't turn on with heater controls.

The fuse will be marked "htr A/C".It might be on the very top row of 2 fuses or it might be in the center next to "B/U horn". There is also a resistor on the heaterbox beside the heater motor that goes bad quite often. It could also be a worn out fan switch inside the car. I would replace the resisitor first.

Try turning the key to the on postion-not crank, just to he postion right before cranking. leave it in that postion for 15 min, Do this three and after the third time go ahead an try to start it. Hopefully this will reset your security for you.
