Light tapping noise at high rpm. dedaler says usual for bike. Dont want to damage motor
SOURCE: my lifters are making a little noise on my 2002
I think it is between 2 or 4 thousth of an inch I set mine by ear you want it snug not overly tight or you will lose alot of power before you run the tappid down tight you need all tension of moter run the the adjustment down tight then back it off 1 quarter of a turn lock jam nut down and try there you may be able to go back tighten them a little more hope that will help quiet that noisy upper end down best of luck

Hi,
The first thing you need to check is the air filter. Sometimes critters can get into the airbox when a bike sits for awhile. Sounds crazy, but it has happened to me. If nothing is blocking the filter, give it a quick clean since you have it out.
Next things to check:
Faulty diaphragm
Improperly adjusted fuel level
Clogged or loose main jet
Faulty fuel pump
You may not be able to check these on your own, but these are the next likely culprits.
Hope this helped

You can go to your local dealer and they usally will copy it out of ther service manuel for you. When you say passing lights do you mean highway lights?
SOURCE: how to lower the idle on a 2002 yamaha 650 v-star classic?
under the left side of the gas tank you will see i black knob/screw at the end of what looks like a hose. the knob faces the rear of bike. that adjusts the idle. its real easy to find and the only adjustment you can make to the carbs.
