1983 honda shadow does not get any power... i charge the battery and it holds a charge, but nothing when i turn the key, it will not crank, no indicator lights no blinker lights, nothing at all. i checked all the wiring and it is all firmly connected and nothing is loose.all the fuses are good also.. everything appears to be in place. all that is not connected is the headlight and the left blinker... i am stumped on what it can be, any suggestions?

We had the same problem, thought it was ignition but found out it was fried connector in juction box, the red and black wires that connect to another set of red black wires but gives juice to the whole box, we pulled them and jumpered together but then had to us small jumper wires to give power back to box, violla took us 3 weeks! :-)

In the absence of cranking, my short list of possible culprits:

starter solenoid (it would "throw" if it were good, producing a click noise).
ignition switch
ignition cylinder

The manual says: (disregard the ECC entry):

Priority Action Part Type Cause
1 Inspect Choke - Stuck or Improperly Functioning Choke.
2 Inspect Fuel Filter - Clogged or Dirty Fuel Filter.
3 Inspect Relay - Fuel Pump Relay - Faulty Fuel Pump Relay.
4 Inspect Fuel Injector Pressure Regulator - Faulty Fuel Injector Pressure Regulator.
5 Inspect Fuel Pump - Low Fuel Pressure.
6 Inspect Engine Control Computer - Incorrect Operating Information Being Delivered and Sent From The EEC.
7 Inspect Fuel Pump Strainer - Clogged or Dirty Fuel Pump Strainer

Some of those older hondas had a fusible link under a plastic cover on the solenoid.
Check for power coming out of the solenoid

To make this much easier it is best to check the charge retained on the battery before we can go further. If there is no charge on the battery then we need not go further than to replace the battery . But if your headlights and horn works with good power the fault can be only with the starter circuit, the ignition switch of the solenoid or the starter motor.
So isolate the fault after checking with the battery removed and tested. The use a multimeter to check if there is voltage to the starter solenoid if not the ignition switch needs a check. if there is supply to the solenoid on switch over then the starter motor brushes or coil or commutator is a suspect.

I have a 96 honda shadow ace. I had to clean the carbs all went well. I tried to start it but the battery was low. I charged it but the battery bike turned over slowly. I put some more water in the battery...

-The battery might not take and hold any charge at all. Take to auto zone to test for you.

Remember. Every car battery 's life is last only 5 years.

Good luck

I have a 1988 honda shadow 1100,Ijust bought a new battery and it is charged up,go to start it it wont start until i hook cables from my car and then it starts right up..It does crank over without car...

Hmm, this can be starter brushes. Engine needs lot of electric power for starter and plugs. If starter is bad, it takes all power and nothing left for plugs and you can"t start the bike.

1983 shadow 500vt will turn over but not crank

You ill need to take off your left engine cover, remove the flywheel, and replace the starter gear (part#5) and three rollers (part#13). This is your one-way clutch that allows your starter motor to turn the engine over. The gear mating surface has become rough or chattered and is not grabbing properly.Replace these parts and your starter motor will turn the engine over again. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1983-honda-vt500c-shadow/o/m9690#sch421900

1983 honda shadow vt750c. not getting spark. power to coils. plugs are good. is there a way to bypass the cdi boxes so i don't have to use them

Dis-connect the negative connection from the the top of the motor and check for corrosion. The bike with not fire if it isn't getting a good ground. I have a 1983 750 shadow would not start dumped a lot of parts into it before I found the corroded connection.

Having starter problems on 2002 Honda shadow 600cc. Batter is fully charged, lights work when key is turned on. Only clicking noise heard when starter button pushed. Able to push start, and runs...

check starter relay first this will be the part thats clicking and will have two thick battery leads on it,,,if you short across the two thick battery leads the starter should turn the engine over,,if this works change the relay,,if nothing happens when you short the two battery leads across then its a starter fault

Either your charging system isn't working or you have an electrical drain while the bike is parked. What have you checked so far?
