2008 Harley Davidson FXCWC Softail Rocker C Questions & Answers
Replacing the drive belt. looking
I don't work on the newer bikes and I'm not very familiar with the Softail "Rocker" but the engine and transmission is the same as earlier Softails. The engine sprocket nut has 150-165 foot pounds of torque on it and right handed threads. You can get it off with a good air wrench or with the use of a locking tool or bar to lock the primary down so you can loosen and, later, retighten the nut. The locking bar keeps the engine from turning while loosening or tightening the nuts. Take the snap ring out of the center of the clutch assembly and remove the clutch adjuster screw and it's plate. Inside the hole is the mainshaft nut. IT HAS LEFT-HANDED THREADS. Torque is 60-80 foot pounds. Take that nut and the nut on the primary chain adjuster off. Remove the engine compensator sprocket, primary chain, and the clutch assembly all at the same time. Now, take the four bolts that hold the inner primary onto the engine and the four nuts that hold it at the transmission. The inner primary cover should come off if you have the starter off. Do not force anything. If it doesn't come off easily, look for something else that might be holding it on. On earlier softails with their design swingarm, to change the final drive belt you had to remove the rear wheel, rear fender and the swingarm as well. I'm not sure about the Rocker as I think it's suspension is different. If you have to remove the front belt pulley, you must have a special deep socket and a pulley locking tool to hold the pulley. This nut also has LEFT HANDED THREADS and torques to over 150 foot pounds. I work on the older Evolution, Shovelhead, Panhead, and Ironhead Sporters that the dealers will no longer work on. This is why I can't be more specific. I'd really suggest that you purchase a service manual when trying to do a job of this complexity. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. The money you save by doing this job yourself will more than pay for the manual. I hope this helps.
Good Luck
