  • You have two fuel pumps. A main fuel pump and an in tank fuel pump and one fuel injection/pump relay that turns the fuel on for the both of them at the same time and each fuel pump has a dedicated fuse.
  • So your vehicle has 1- relay, 2 pumps, 2 fuel pump fuses [1 for each pump ]
  • The relay and both fuses are located under the drivers side of the dash in a little fuse/relay panel.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

You may have to bend the conections on the fuel pump relay, so they fit tightly. Try gently twisting it l/r, while turning the engine over.
Hope that's it.

You don't give any details about the vibration, you know what "strange" means but the rest of us have to make a guess.

The most likely cause is that the wheels are out of balance. This can happen if you've recently struck a kerb or pothole, if an existing balance weight has fallen off, if you have recently removed a wheel and refitted it, or if you've had a tyre repaired or replaced without having the wheel rebalanced afterwards.

There are many other potential causes, but getting the wheel balancing checked and adjusted is the cheapest and easiest thing to start with. Get the balancing checked and then report back if the problem is not resolved.

Chilton or Haines publishes manuals for the 740. Of the two, the Haines offers more direct parts removal and replacement info. The Chilton has too much generic filler. Get either on Ebay for less than $20.

SOURCE: '90 Volvo 740 2.3l turbo water pump install instructons needed

Go to an auto supply store like PEP boys or Advance Auto, etc., and buy a Haynes Repair Manual for the 740. You may be able to consult one at your local library for free. Even if it doesn't cover your model year, the replacement instructions are pretty much the same for all years. in fact even a 240 Volvo manual would be essentially the same. Pay particular attention to the installation instructions....you have to slide the pump on, and then rotate it a few degrees clockwise to make the upper o-ring seal. Good luck!

1990 volvo 740 GL. If you have electrical starting problems whre do you begin and end with troubleshooting. I have cleaned all the connections on bat terminal, changed out the 2 black 40 amp relays....

If you haven't changed the fuel pump relay, that will be the problem.
It's the one on the right side behind the ashtray.
Hope that sorts it out for you.

Not starting after replacing fuel filter and tune-up

I had the same problem with a 1989 Volvo 740 GLE station wagon. I did the same thing you did. But this time I talked to the local Independent Volvo service shop, not the dealer. The problem turn out to a bad fuel pump in the gas tank. You can replace it from inside the back of the station wagon. Just remove the floor panel to access the top of the fuel tank. But before you do; note that there are two fuel pumps, one inline underneath the car on the drivers side, and the one inside the gas tank. Before, you replace any of the fuel pumps check the fuel pump relay behind the astray on the left side. It could also be a bad relay.

Volvo 740(1990) i replaced my coil and change the battery, it started, then went 50 yards the it died and now it just turns over, but won`t start, is there anything else it could be? thanks

Many things can cause this on your 740. Fuel pump, fuel pump relay, rpm sensor, MAF sensor, radio suppression relay. I've never seen the coil fail on these era Volvo's, ever. And I've diagnosed at least 50 of these with stalling problems. Check the codes, and when it wont start, check for spark and fuel pressure, you're likely missing one of them.

Fuel pump

Have you checked the fuel pump relay and fuse? That lives in the relay/fuse panel under the radio, behind the ash tray. I always carry a spare relay and fuse. The pump might have taken out both of these, The fuel pump relay is located in the third row, toward the firewall, next to the last relay on the right. The first in that row is a big relay for the headlights. The fulk pump relay is located between that and the one on the right. There are only three relays in the last row.
