i would return that alternater and bring the one you are replacing to compare to new one. make sure they are the same. they sell several differant ones for the same vehicle.

The cost of many of these units is quite high, compared to what they used to be. Still, the choice of new, reman, or even one from a boneyard is your choice!
Consider that a new unit is just that.eEverything including the case is new. A remanufactured unit is "iffy" and depends upon the quality standards or the manufacturer... Some only replace failed items, clean it up and let it fly... Better shops, replace not only failed items but items which are slightly worn or prone to failure. (a good rebuild includes brushes, regulator, end bearings, diodes and anything else they deem necessary) When buying a "boneyard" part, try to get one with low miles, preferably one that looks as if it was recently replaced, or one that was in the latest year vehicle that fits your application. As I said the choice is yours!!!
Good luck!
SOURCE: possible bad alternator?
I went through three alternators before we found a good one for our saturn sl2. Now she has been good for two years. All I did was go back to where we bought it from, they hooked up the alternator to a machine and gave us a new one when it read that it was faulty.

Your voltage regulator supplies the path for the control lead of the alternator and varies the amount of current available to provide the magnetic field of the armature with the required strength.
Measuring from this lead to ground won't show much voltage.
Apparently the regulator is not integrated into the alternator and is probably failed.
If you can chase the control lead backward, you will find the regulator and these are mostly mounted on the fender well or firewall.
