Check engine light is on, no speed ohmmeter or odometer working. Took it to auto zone for diagnostic test....they are telling me speed sensor. Where is this located? By looking at the part it looks easy to replace. Help please.
thank you.
Jeep Liberty 2002 woahs !

I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited with the same problem. The main problem I have found to be the routing of the speed sensor wires located on the rear difrential. They are 2 blue wires on my jeep and probably the same on yours. The problem is that they rub on the E-brake cable and once the wire is exposed they short and the speedometer and any other options running off they speed sensor quit working and that includes the tranny shift points and can cause the torque converter to not unlock and cause stalls. I am having the same problem for the third time and chrysler and jeep are both aware of the problem and unwilling to repair the problem or post a recall.
My spedometer stopped working also and the check engine light is on...Yes, it's the speed sensor...The speed sensor on a Jeep Liberty is located on the rear axel which is why it dies, because of where it's placed everytime you go over a bump, pot hole etc the sensor hits against each other...This should really be a recall on Jeeps end, for placement! Good luck to all of you with this problem! Before finding out what the probelm was (by a neighbor/mechanic) I brought the car to Chrysler and after sucking thousands from me...and not fixing the error, I fixed it in front of my house for the mer cost of the peice and a six pack for my neighbor!
Speed sensors are generally in one of two places, either on the back of the transmission, usually on the top side, or in the actual rear end. If the vehicle is a 4x4, it will be on the transfer case, generally on the back side near the top.
It's the speed sensor. This has happened on my '03 twice. It's one of 3 sensors located on top of the differential.
I have a Code on My 2002 Jeep Liberty P0500 Speed Sensor A.
Which is sensor is A?
HELPoolHall --With my jeep liberty I had the same problem with the interior lights speedometer and others. I took it to the shop and they had to replace the PCU primary computer unit. it was pretty expensive I hope you are under waranty

Driving my car and the light came on and the speedometer stopped working.. i don't know what is going on. The next day the headlights, interior lights and wind shield wipers stopped working. Someone please help.
My transmission will slip and the car will buck if you try to depress the gas pedal too far. Engine light comes on and error caode says it's the speed sensor.
My speedometer on my Jeep Liberty 2002 went crazy last night. It would work for five minutes and then look like my wheels were spinning on ice.
I have the same problem with my jeep and no one seems to even know where the speed sensor is located, not even the people at auto zone, they looked it up and couldn't even find a diagram. I don't want to take it in seeings how its such a small part and looks very easy to replace
Its set on your tranfer case be hind foward drive shaft
nor did OP even say its 4wd
nor if its a stick or auto shifted trans.
and matters, big time what drive line
was delivered day 1.
nor even stated what DTC was stored.
if A/T box.
the 45RFE 2wd box , its here.
this box has 2,
so no DTC, how can we help.
on this year jeep
the PCM knows if transfer case is in high or low range, and just does math to compute
speed, to the rear trans sensors seen here.
