1997 Plymouth Neon Logo
Anonymous Posted on Feb 18, 2011

Hello first if you can'tell by the wording of the question I am about to ask I am a woman.. I have a 97 Neon and recently my car started making a noise now what I do know about neons is that the brakes squeel even if they are new. Now I don't know if this problem I am having is a BREAK issue or a ROTAR issue. You know the sound a card in a bike wheel sounds like, well my car makes that type of noise when I am breaking and sometimes it happens when I first start driving sometimes it doesn't until I have been driving for about 15 mins. Also my breaks seem to be fine its the noise I don't know what that is if anyone knows what it is please help...

Sounds like you know cars better than many others:) How old are your front brakes? Yes new brakes can make noise on any car if cheap parts or incomplete parts are used...Your brakes are actually designed to make noise when they are not right:) The squeal can be the front pads are worn down to the safety sensor...causing a grinding sound that comes and goes...as they continue to wear, they will squeal more frequently. Also as they become dirty...(bad weather) the dirt trapped on the pad to rotor contact area causes this same sound...sometimes a good automatic car wash can clear this up...as the rotors are wearing they can also generate noise, and vibration when you are stopping...The front brake pads and rotors are not complicated to change on your Neon...If you decide to replace the pads...the quietest and cleanest are the ceramic pads...These are available at most parts stores for good prices. Hope this helps:)

Engine code 12 55 on 1996 plymouth neon

12 is telling you the battery has been disconnected recently, or gone dead, and 55 is end of message. In other words, you have no trouble codes to be concerned about.

97 neon wont start i just hear a clicking noise in the relay area

1st check the connections at the battery for corrosion, clean and make sure you have a tight connection. Bring the battery to a parts store, they will check it's condition for free. It may be bad, and all you need to do is replace it. If they find it's not charged fully, bad connections at cables or alternator may be to blame.

My Neon keeps stalling

Try the simple stuff first and ask yourself these questions:

How old are the spark plugs? (I think this is 90% gaurenteed the problem)

Is the car getting enough air through the filter?
Is the filter dirty? (replace if so)
If not you might need your idle advanced a little.

97 Neon Expresso, Schreeching Fan

Both your air con and defogger (I am assuming you mean front windshield defroster setting, and not the back window) engage the air conditioner pump/compressor.

The screeching can be either a bad belt or a bad compressor.

How long has it been since the belt was changed? If it is old, and slipping, it will cause the screech at speed.
If the belt has recently been changed, and is adjusted properly, I would start looking that the air compressor pump.
