I have a 1997 volkswagen Golf, the passenger door won't open when it's cold. I've had the car for a few years and every winter the door just won't open. Also, sometimes, when it is moderately cool out, the outside handle will work but the inside handle will not. Occasionally, if you push on the door really hard, then it will open from the outside, I assume it's from changing the pressure on the latch. I've tried cleaning the latch with cleaning solvent and lubricating it with wd-40, although, neither seemed to have any effect. Also, I've taken the door panel off and there appears to be some vacuum tube attached to the latch mechanism, which may explain why it temperature is affecting it. In case it makes a difference, it is a 4-door and 2L.

Figured it out. Also, I'm op.
Step 1: remove the inside door panel. (put a rag or towel in the bottom of the door in case anything falls down the door.)
Step 2: remove the the 4 bolts that hold the latch, and the outside door handle.
Step 3: remove the outside door handle.
Step 4: remove the vacuum tube and electrical wires from the latch.
Step 5: take off the bar that connects the latch to the inside handle.
Step 6: remove latch mechanism (you'll probably have to loosen the window rails, don't unscrew the top one all the way.)
Step 7: take the latch apart. there is 1 screw and 3 plastic locks.
Step 8: figure out how the latch mechanism works, see if you can fix it. In my case there a bar that is supposed to move up when the door is unlocked. It wasn't moving up, so it just needed some lube.

put it back together by doing the steps in reverse order.

Take it off the door handle side of the cable, not the latch side.

SOURCE: Volkswagen golf GTI 1994 2L wont turn over,

Hi, the likely problem is your safety interlock. If you have a manual transmission, the interlock is above the clutch pedal. If you have automatic trans, the interlock may be on the shifter or the transmission. Let me know if you can't find it.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6222268-engine_doesnt_crank_turn_over . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

SOURCE: Volkswagen golf GTI 1994 2L automatic window wont

Do you mean the car is automatic or the window? (punctuation required :o) If by automatic window, you mean pull it up 2 clicks and it closes all the way, same for down then it probably needs resetting. Most manufactures have a self-set procedure which is as follows. with ignition on, hold the window button down for 20 seconds, then hold it up for 20 seconds then repeat the process 1 more time. This resets most brands of electric window.
Hope this helps.

Vw golf mk4 my rear passenger door willnot open with central locking key system. i can't even open it from the inside, pull the door handle and the lock pin rises but door won't open. i believ

This worked for me on 2008 Mk5 Golf, after the rear passenger door would not open fro outside or inside.

Hold the inside door latch open and keep it extended, then with the key fob open and close the door locks (still holding the inside latch open). Keep locking and unlocking the door, then it made a kluck and it released.

Not positive if it works on VW's but try locking/ unlocking the passenger door with the key. There are sensors in both doors.

Door wont open with the master key,a 1997 volkswagen golf 5 door

Does your key have a chip? Some keys have a chip that is part of the cars' anti-theft system....they can go bad or be damaged; these types of keys can be replaced and re-programmed. If the key opens the passenger door or the hatch and not the driver's door check the wiring and locking mechanism for that door. You might also check if there is a fuse or relay switch/sensor for it....sometimes cleaning the main lock switch inside the car and checking that the wires have a good connection will solve the problem. Posting more info about the problem and if there was any type of work (battery replaced?) or other problems before this happened would be extremely helpful. Good Luck!
