Every time I try and start my 98 Deville it tells me to wait 3 minutes and when it does start it says something about security problem that it might not restart. How do I fix this?

Try to reset the security system, Do this it takes 30 minutes. Turn the ignition switch until the starter "just" clicks but don't let the engine start then let the key come back to run and wait 10 Minutes the security light will change after 10 Minutes turn the switch off then to bump the starter ect. Do this 3 times and after you turn it off the (Third) last time turn the key and allow to start. This should fix it. I hope this helps. Take care. Password or Passkey? My '98 deVille requires a special resister chip in the key. If you have the wrong resistance on the key it will not start and won't even try for three minutes.

You will have to wait the three minutes. During that time clean the key with an alcohol pad. Works for me.

Hello, OK if you have a Black working key and you want to program an additional key start the car, shut it off immediately remove key insert new key and start car. new key is now programmed. If you don't have a key then this is what needs to be done: turn on ignition engine off, the security tell tale should be on. Wait 10 minutes, the security should be off. turn key off. Repeat the preceding steps two more times (total of 30 minutes) WAIT AT LEAST 10 SECONDS between each time. On the last step be sure to turn ignition off (10sec) before you start car.

Bad contacts in the ignition lock cylinder.

You need to replace the ignition switch. The contacts are worn that read the resistor pellet in your key.

My Mom's car also did this, turned out to be the Starter.
