2001 Mitsubishi Galant. Battery light coming on. Had alternator replaced. The next week, Service Engine light came on. Had tune-up and coil replaced. Two days later, unable to operate vehicle. Diagnosed as defective coil. Had coil replaced, but Service Engine light back on. Am afraid I will get stuck again with the car.

Check your alternator fuse. On Galant's it is part of the positive battery clamp , is a dealer only part, and can run anywhere from $12 to $20. Your battery light will not come on , your alternator is fine, your battery is in good order, but the battery will go dead and kill the car for no apparent reason. If the fuse is not part of the positive battery clamp you will find it in the fuse box under the hood in this case it is a square fuse (60,70,80 amp etc.).
not sure these are related. battery light is due to alternator failure. Oil light is due to oil pump wear. The oil pump may work OK for a couple more years. Replace it if it gets much worse (if light comes on above 1000 rmp). The alternator must be replace now.
have the codes scanned (most parts stores will do this for free) then cleared but if you just clear the codes it probably just come back on there a reason why that light comes on need to fix the problem
could be the crank sensor, you need to check spark and fuel delivery, if you have fuel then its got to be the high tension side of things that are wrong, does this model run off a coil pack for the ht, could be that, you said you change the alternator, check connections at the rear of alternator, this could be the supply for the ht etc, good luck.
the issues with testing an alternator, is that if it is a turbine error, that never starts until constant wear is being promoted by the computer.
This "Mechanic" was he using an OBD Scanner? if not? why Not?
have someone do a diagnostics on your car.
i am not a mechanic but an alternator should have nothing to do with smog it is the exhaust system not the eletrical system hope this clarifies things regards Jim
