When you sat all gone do you mean you can no longer see it on the dip stick? Add a litre of oil immediately and check the dip stick. Once you see oil on the dip stick add just 500ml more an check again, the difference between Min and Max is only 500ml. When topped up inspect the exterior of the transmission casing for obvious oil leaks. When you start the engine is the exhaust smokey blue?...indicative of oil burning. 'Leaks' and 'burning' are the only exit routes for the oil.

John, oil pressure should not vary much with engine speed. As the engine speed increases oil pressure reaches a point at which the oil pressure relief valve opens. Try running the engine to 3000rpm whilst sat on the drive, if there is a leak drips will appear within minutes.

I can't imagine that your car is "burning" all that oil in 20 miles. To be sure, remove the spark plugs and look for a lot of ash or really black/oily plugs. I would say more than likely you have an oil leak. Check under your car for a lot of oil streaking. At that rate it should be everywhere underneath.

Why is my Audi A4 2010 petrol only doing about 300 miles before oil light comes on

2 questions.
1) Is the oil actually low on the dipstick?
If it is, you might have an oil leak, so you would need to look underneath and see. Also look for puddles when you park.
The most common reason for such consumption would be a burst oil pressure switch, or a leaking valve cover gasket.
Either of these will leak lots of oil.
The last possible reasons, which are really rare, would be engine parts defective,( like oil rings), or a leak in the brake booster which would suck oil from the crankcase into the brake booster.
2) If the oil is not leaking out, and the dipstick shows full, you will be needing a new oil pressure switch, or to have the electronics repaired.
God bless your efforts.

BMW E46 318i Fuel consumption problem it is apparently using 1 mile of fuel every 100 meters. BMW E46 318i

Could be many things, but fuel pressure regulator, leaking injectors are most likely. DO NOT DRIVE UNTIL FIXED. If the fuel is really getting into the oil pan, oil will be diluted and could damage engine bearings.

The fuel on my 2002 ford expedition suv dropped from 1/4 of a tank to 0 in just seconds

Sounds like you've sprung a leak somehow. Check to see if any gasoline is leaking. You should be able to smell it if it was.

How to reset oil light on dash of 01 1.4 golf

Oil lights do not reset.

Your Golf either has low oil level/pressure or the oil pressure sending unit/wiring is bad.

You need to immediately check your engine oil level. The instructions are in your manual.

If the oil level is low, DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR! YOU WILL DAMAGE THE ENGINE! Add oil as instructed in your manual and the light should go out within 20 seconds or so after you start your car. You will then need to check for leaks and/or find out why your oil was gone.

If the oil level is normal, you need to get the car to a mechanic to see if the problem is the sending unit or an actual oil pressure problem. Since at this point you cannot be certain, I recommend that you have the car towed to avoid engine damage that will happen if your oil pressure is indeed low.

My vw golf 1.6 2002 plate burns to much oil it has a high engine pressure and it's burning a lot of fuel. It also produces a high amount of smoke or a short period. It has only done 70000 miles. I noticed...

Typical worn engine symptoms. The oil burning and smoking is most likely the valve stem seals gone hard and worn allowing oil into the cylinders when running.

They can be replaced insitu by most shops without removing the cylinder head.

White Mayonnaise on the oil filler cap and in breather pipe is often from engine always running too cool or many short trips....under 5 miles. Coolant temperature should be 85C and above after a mile or two.

If the pistons are worn, a used engine would be best bet..

In order to know how worn the engine is the engine needs a compression test and a leak down test. if the shop you take it to does not know what a leak down test is, take it some else.

Compression pressure should be even on all cylinders and around 130 to 180 pis.

A' leak down test' is putting air into each cylinder with a special two gauge tool and measuring the cylinder air loss in percentages. Good engine will be 5% to 15% loss. Bad engine will be 25% and above.

On a diesel engine the percentages will be the same but compression will be 400PSI or better.

Golf GT Tdi 115 - performance when warm.

you dont say what miles the car has done.but you should now be using semi synthetic 20/50 oil and try using a fuel additive(redex/wynns)to clean the injectors.if you are using oil it is possible that the engine has lost some of its compression due to ring/valve wear.did you know that to convert your engine to a 130/150bhp unit, you only need to change the ecu try"diesel tuning"website.....

Oil light goes on...had a dry stick 4 1/2 qts put in. no oil on ground. after oil change light went on at 70 miles.. on 15 secs then off for 5 miles then on again 15 secs--- off 4 miles--off 3 miles- off 2...

if it's not going onto the ground, and it's not being burned, check the positive crankcase ventilation and the exhaust gas recirculation valves for oil seepage...also check your air filter, if its got oil on it replace the pcv valve.

Coolant consumption

Are you sure you've checked everywhere around the engine block? What about arounr the oil filter as some has an oil cooler which tend to leak coolant? If it uses coolant, it must have gone somewhere and normally you should be able to see a trace of antifreeze leak aomewere.
Let us know how you get on.Cheers.
