Cant shift 1996 jeep cherokee into 4 wheel drive/shifter stuck

what aer tires touching? ice or dirt.?
if its not AWD "Quada-Trac"
then its part time 4wd
and is only for driving on ice or dirt
PT 4wd that is what Part time means.

see that here (down for week end)
https://www.jeepdied.com/

see the most common options there.
i cant guess what you bought.

to undo what you did,
get one tire on dirt or ice
and shift back to 2wd

or read your operators guide
good luck.....
i cant really help, can see your shifter
nor see what tires are rolling on.

ALL JEEP PART TIME SYSTEMS DO THIS,
WHEN DRIVERS DO NO READ THE OPERATORS GUIDE
IT'S NOT AWD! IF NOT.

THERE IS NO CENTER DIFFERENTIAL OR MAGIC CLUTCH

Why won't my Honda Civic go in neutral?

There is a little bitty oval shaped covring in front of the gear shifter, just to the right side where you can't see it very well from the drivers seat. Pry it out. Stick a key in the hole and then you can move the shifter.

This info should be in the owners manual. There is lots of handy info in there.

You can also look at this link for info on the shifter for this vehicle.

Would need more info on the heat/ac problem. But on the shifting problem check under the hood and make sure when the shifter is moved the linkage moves. If not the shift cable is most likely the problem, but check at the shifter to make sure.

Gear shifter sticking (auto) from Park to reverse and vice versa.

you need to have the shifting cable lubricated or replaced.

My 1990 Honda Civic will not shift above second gear.

is it a manual or automatic...if its a manual you probably forgot to hook up the shift linkage..if its a manual..you probably didnt put the shifter cable from the shifter on top right, so itll pull the gears when you if in and out on to or back and forth..look and see if the cable has too much slack..that hooks up to the transmission(automatic)....
