Flushing out the radiator just cleans the radiator if your not getting any heat you will have to locate the 2 hoses that go into the firewall and either remove them from the moter or the fire wall and using a garden hose flush the heater core out.

This seems to be a common problem with these cars. I had the same problem with my '99. I just flushed the core using compressed air amd water after letting CLR soak in it for several hours. It may also be important to prefill the heater core before putting on the hoses as otherwise it could be airbound. Long story short, my heat now blows HOT after being ice cold for far too long.

2002 mercury cougar overheats at idle and when drove faster ik head gasket isnt blown, thermostat , water pump, relay, its been flushed out till clean idk whats wrong at all.

I suspect that if you do not have electric fan/s then the fan clutch or viscous fan hub has failed
indications are over heating at idle , stop lights , slow traffic, high rpms at slow speed but cools down as soon as there is enough road speed to put air through the radiator.

Where is the radiator cap 2001 mercury cougar V6 diagram

The drain plug is actually just a screw that requires a large phillips head to remove. It is located on the passenger side at the bottom of the radiator. The best way to locate it is to find the tube that runs from the coolant reservoir to the radiator and look underneath where it hits the radiator. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My 1999 cougar is over heating i have changed the thermostat and the radiator already and the water pump is good but the car is still over heating should i get a coolant flush to see if that clears it up...

Why would you even think about a coolant flush?

You have a new radiator, so all that is left is the heater core
That isn't your problem

You lost all the coolant when you did the radiator & thermostat
So what is there to flush ?

No bottle of doctor do good will fix your issues

Diagnose the main cause

How do you know the water pump is good?
Was it in your hand and still had an impeller that wasn't eaten away?
Was it pumping coolant and the system built up pressure that you
actually tested

Have you tested for combustion gases in case the head gasket is gone?

My car is running hot do u think i need to change the motor?

buy a radiator flush kit, some prestone flush additive, and even maybe a new thermostat, and a simple haynes manual for your auto. The manual will tell you where and how to change the thermostat, and how to drain the radiator, and how much radiator fluid you will need. The flush kit will instruct you where to put the flush fitting.
Remove the thermo, flush the motor, install new thermo and gasket. Add radiator fluid, done. This should solve your over heating probs. Don't let it over heat! You can cause major probs then.

You could always take it to a shop and pay the $200 to do it for you. My way would cost you less than $50.

please click yes if this helps. thanks

Low Heat on 1999 Mercury Cougar

I had the same problem with my 199 cougar 2.0 4 cyl.
The problem was air in the cooling system.

I had to bleed the air out of the system, and now the heat
works much better.

I put a flushing tee between the back of the thermostat and
the heater core, and made sure that water flowed out of there.
Then I disconnected the small hose from the top of the coolant
resevoir, and poured water into it using a funnel until the coolant
level started to rise in the coolant resevoir. Then started the car, left the radiator cap off, and let it come up to temperature (thermostat open)
then over a period of about 5 minutes, periodically "goosed" the engine to clear any remaining air bubbles.

The heat is MUCH better now.

My 1997 mercury cougar is running on the VERY high side of hot

check to see that the electric fans are turning on when they are supposed to, and make sure the coolant is full and that the rad cap is good. Bad radiator caps are one of the most common overheating causes

Heater not blowing hot air

i suspect you have aur trapped in the engine. you need to purge the trapped air. leave radiator cap loose, park engine uphill on ramps to try and get radiator opening higher than top of engine.
fill radiator and coolant reservoir. start engine, warm up and wait for air to purge. may take a few attempts. be careful with hot coolant.
