Timing gears has nothing to do with the transmission. Is it auto manual? Does it go into gear and just go in reverse or wont go into gear.. Check linkage for binding if it just wont go after putting in gear it is trans problem..good luck.
Replace your reverse light switch . It's more than likely sticky or stuck. It is located on the transmission under the car. Inside the trans. Some cars have them in the shift linkage area in the shifter console . You didn't specify if auto or manual trans.
I had a simular sounding experience with my 99 beetle after hitting a curb. felt like it was stuck in 3rd and 4th only-had no reverse. My problem was that there was a linkage on the sifter gears broken.
your linkage on the transmission must be off. try having someone move the shifter while you watch the linkage arms under the car on the trans to make sure its all intact. it could be a loose or broken bolt on the trans causing it to not disengage from reverse this will cause it to not start.
The transmission type wasn't specified as to manual or automatic,as both were available on 91-96 Stealth's,but from the complaint,i presume manual trans. If it is the manual trans,5th gear and Reverse gear are usually on the same shift rail.So part of the diagnosis is to pay attention to 5th gear for any problems.Another part of the diagnosis is the clutch pedal and hydraulics that activate the clutch. When the problem is happening, try this:pump the clutch pedal rapidly, and repeatedly, then try to engage Reverse. If it goes right into Reverse, then the clutch hydraulic system needs to be inspected.Good luck.
