Just bought our 2002 Jeep Liberty. The oil pressure light came on shortly after we bought it. Took the Liberty in for an oil change right away- pressure is fine, no leaks. The light is still coming on and alarm goes off when driving. Could this be an oil pump?
The man said the oil pressure light is on as in bad oil pressure. You should have the oil pressure sensor checked. The man said the oil pressure light is on as in bad oil pressure. You should have the oil pressure sensor checked.

there is a sensor in the bottom of the pan that checks oil leavle they get gumed up and stick next oil change you can pull it out and clean somtimes this helps if it dose not loked gumed or stuck replace it
How is the sensor connected to the engine? I had a 2000 model Pajero which did the same thing. It had to do with the way the sensor was connected to the engine, the hollow bolt they used was aftermarket and didn't let enough oil through to the sensor. So the oil has to warm up first before it can get through to the sensor.
A couple of things could be wrong a bad oil pressure sensor, a short in
the sensor wiring, low idle oil pressure. Checking this is simple on
some models.
While disconnecting the sensor from its wired connector
and the light stays on is a short in the wiring, if it stays off its
hopefully a bad sensor. Before just replacing the sensor I would either
buy a gauge to check the pressure at the engine and thus checking the
sensor also. I HATE DUMMY LIGHTS!!!
Gauges are simple, easy to install
and easy to see a problem before engine damage occurs. On the bad end
of the spectrum of possible problems the oil pump may be worn out, or
even the engine may be worn out to the point oil pressure loss at low
idle or while oil is sloshing forwards at stop signs.
Chrysler mounted the oil sensing unit on these motors directly above the oil filter. It is very easy to accidently hook the sensing unit with the oil filter wrench and crack or break it. For anyone whose oil light problem developed right after an oil change, this may be the problem. To change the unit, pry up the plastic retaining clip with a screw driver and unplug the wire harness. If the plastic part of the sensor is broken, (or if you break it to facilitate easy removal), you can remove the sensor with a 27mm socket. Once you have removed it, use a piece of CLEAN pipe cleaner to insure the hole isn't plugged with sludge which could also cause the oil light to come on. Screw in the new unit finger tight, then snug up with a WRENCH. You cannot use the socket to tighten it as it would damage the plastic part of the new sensor. Plug the wire harness back on, then start the engine to make sure it doesn't leak oil around the new unit.
is this a high mileage engine ?
