Grinding or whining? A lot of power steering pumps kinda whine when turning. How long has it been since you've changed the power steering fluid? Since 2000??? It looses it viscosity kinda like motor oil. I'd change it first, that's the cheapest and easiest thing to do
It sounds like your car is low on power steering fluid. When the power steering fluid is low, the power steering pump is running dry, which makes a grinding or moaning sound. Check the power steering fluid level and top up if necessary. It should be on the left side of the engine compartment. Your owners manual should have the exact location of the power steering reservoir, and what type of power steering fluid to use. Good luck Matt
Sounds like you need a new power steering hose. To verify this, I would dry up any wet areas on the hose and pump with a towel, get a flashlight and start the vehicle and try to determine the exact site of the leak which is usually at the ends of the hoses. Good luck!
What color is the power steering fluid? If it is dark and/or grayish you may have a power steering pump which has ground itself to death. While grinding itself....it has contaminated the complete system. The cure in most Ford products with this PS pump is a complete power steering pump replacement and steering rack change with a good hose/line flushing before reconnecting.
As weird as it may sound, i'd check the power steering fluid. An empty power steering fluid tank will make the power steering grind and make weird noises, and having it at full lock will worsen the noise and have no fluid to build pressure it might starting jumping the steering around a bit. If the power steering is OK then you will need to take the rear drums apart to check for any broken retainer springs preventing the pads from returning into place and it will keep braking and grinding. Could also just be some rust or a broken off metal part in the drum also, but either way you will need to take the drums off and inspect the springs, clips and pads to ensure everything is OK and nothing stays jammed into braking position. Also be sure to verify the rear brake cylinders in the drums, as it may also be them that don't return to the initial position and keep the brakes on.
you have a power steering leak, when in full lock position the power steering pump is actually sucking in air and this is your noise. you will have to locate the leak and replace the leaking part and fill it to proper level.Ford will accept trans fluid for power steering fluid.
check the cap it says power steering fluid what happen was when the level is low it makes a grinding sound in it so check the level and also your asking what fluid your need to use well its a power steering fluid go to autozone tell them what your car is and they give you the right one for your car their all the same but you know if you wanna make sure its a good idea too..
