This is what is required to do the job....and it would take you no longer than 1 hour for the beginner...

3.0L (VIN S) Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  3. Disengage the electrical harness connector and output terminal wiring.
  4. Remove the engine control sensor nut and position the nut aside.
  5. Unfasten the two alternator bolts and one alternator stud bolt.
  6. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Place the alternator into position and install the two mounting bolts and bolt stud. Tighten the bolts and stud bolt to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  2. Place the engine control sensor in position and install its retaining nut. Tighten the nut to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-20 Nm).
  3. Attach the electrical harness connector and output terminal wiring. Tighten the output wiring terminal retaining nut to 80-106 inch lbs. (9-12 Nm).
  4. Install the accessory drive belt.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable

Very easy, the hardest part is getting the serpentine belt off due to lack of room. make sure you disconnect the battery first, the alt sits right on top

1999 Ford Taurus Coolant Light

Jackie, Hi, yes this would be the problem if the temperature sensor is not working it will not tell the fan too start, so best advice would be too change this sensor, or have someone do it for you and that should cure your problem, Colin.

How to replace alternator on 1999 ford taurus 6 cyl.

If this is for the 3.0L Vulcan engine, it's really easy. There are two mounting bolts and a stud nut. The mounting bolts go through the left side of the mounting bracket and through the alternator (it's at the top of the serpentine assembly). You'll have to take the stud not off from the lower intake manifold to remove the second mounting bracket. Make sure you disconnect the negative battery terminal first so that you don't fry anything. You'll also have to remove the nut that attaches the ground to the alternator and remove the wiring harness. The nut is enclosed in a black rubber pocket that protects the connection from moisture. After you've done all this, just pull it up and off the assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.
