On the drivers side under the hood beneath the rubber (big) hose going to the throttle body you will see a red cap turn it counter clock wise to remove, the transmission should be at operating temp. There is a dipstick on the bottom side of the cap. The marks are self explanatory. When putting the cap back on make sure you get it all the way on an tight. Note when you pull it out the first time wipe the dipstick off then put it back in and when you bring it back out that's when you get the reading, also when you are checking it the engine should be running, transmission in park with the park brake set.

97 town car not shifting from 1st to 2nd gear

Check the Coolant (antifreeze) level. My 94 continental has a hard time shifting from 2nd to 3rd when the level is low. Also, this may indicate that the transmission fluid is too old to work properly. The transmission fluid is cooled at the bottom of the radiator, since cool fluid works better than hot fluid (especially when the trans fluid is old) that could make the transmission not shift properly. Keep the coolant level up until you can have the trans fluid checked.

1994 Cadillac Deville - won't shift into reverse after sitting overnight or for a couple of hours. Will shift into 1st and then will shift into reverse. What is causing this?

Check the transmission fluid level, reverse needs twice the pressure to activate that drive does. If low refill and try again. If fluid good, I`d say the tranny 3rd reverse clutch is worn out. Recheck the condition of the fluid on the dipstick, if it appears burnt or very dirty I`d still suspect internal tranny clutch issues. It also has a low reverse clutch, but goes into 1st gear as you said.

What are the symptoms of a faulty transmission? i have 97 saturn sl and i want to keep it running

the biggest sign will be the transmission slipping. Others include rough shifting, excessive shavings in the transmission fluid pan, excessive leaks. If it is giving you problems you can change the fluid and filter, both require removing the pan and that will help.

97 buick transmission can't find second gear.

Have you checked the transmission fluid? If it is full, does it have a burnt smell to it? If it does, change the transmission fluid and filter. If not, check all vacuum lines going to the transmission back to their source. If none of these is the case, I would check with a good transmission shop.

Transmission takes long to shift

Check the Transmission fluid level asap. if the level is ok, this may be a clogged filter issue. this will require you to change the transmission fluid and filter if possible. I would also, flush the trans as well.

This will help with the shifting. if it continues after you preform the above suggestions, this will confirm an issue that concerns the PCM or, faulty shift solenoids.

Hard down shift

sounds like your transmission. also it could be the axle, which if it is, consider yourself lucky. you should get it checked out.
