1999 jaguar xj8 when engine is switch off water comes out of overflow about 2 lites at a time if i drive 5 miles or 205 miles its the same, temp right on gauge midway ,fan always stops when engine is switched off.

For the amount of money it will cost it would be worth changing the thermostat anyway. They aren't very expensive and reasonably easy to repair.
Water pump replacements are more expensive AND more work. Try the cheaper one first as thermostats are known to wear out.
If the overflow tank is backing up it will be because the safety valve built into the water pump is diverting built up pressure.

1998 to 2001 Jaguar XJ8 have a big engine design problem, timing chain tensioners are made out of plastic, and with time they brake ,causing big Damage to Engine, if you buy the car make sure those tensioners are replaced to a next generation tensioners wich are way better(made with some metal) as per gas consuption, about 16 miles per gallon in the city and 22 in the highway.

You might need a lube job or you may need to see if noise is coming from another place such as your engine water pump, brakes, power steering. Look for leaks.

discoonect the battery, turn the key 5-6 times to start then re connect battery. This will reset the computer and could reset the fault

I've had the same problem on my 2001. It turned out to be the battery. Apparently the voltage had dropped to the point that the computer began to malfunction. I'd first go to a battery shop and have it checked under load before looking for other solutions.
