Excessive fuel consumption volkswagen golf 1.8

I have a 1991 Mk2 VW Golf 1.8 driver (automatic) which is using an excessive amount of fuel - I can sometimes watch the fuel gauge go down as I'm driving! There are no fuel leaks, no excessive exhaust fumes and the car is running fine. It's a carburettor type, not fuel injection. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Lee.

Hi Dovotrad, thanks for your response, I'm not sure what type of carburator it is, I'm pretty sure it's not a Weber. I've been told it's a single point injection if that helps.

Having said that I think I may have nailed the problem now though, the radio of all things appears to be interfering with the fuel gauge - I turn the radio on, the fuel gauge drops; I turn the radio off and the fuel gauge goes back up again. Probably a bad electrical connection somewhere?

    Thanks again,

    Lee

I need to know where the fuel pump relay (J17) is for a 2004 mk5 vw golf

You very likely are going to replace the fuel pump, well i recomend you check the vw recalls on failing fuel pumps or related fuel lines and fasteners.
I own a 2004 vw golf and began to leak fuel at the fuel delibery nipples right out of the fuel pump. the problem is that either there tension on the nipple and cause to crak thus leak, or the fuel line is short and pulling toward the rear right tire causing it to crak and leak. the
Volkswagen Golf Recall 05V154000 is the solution

'96 VW Golf GL with 2.0 motor. Cold start knock

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)
