What wire go where on 1980 F 150 4.9 starter

well the service manual covers this.
next time take photos as you work.
there are only 4 connections to a starter. some 3
battery not connected first oK<????????

1: casing grounded to bell. and huge cable to battery neg lug.
2: the huge red + battery Plus cable to solenoid in huge lug
3; the tiny faston plug called the key line(crank)
4: on some starts there is short think jumper from inboard soleniod
out PIN to the starter motor actual.
bottom right I marked NO ! bat neg is engine ground or at starter mounted huge bold.

check the brown(small wire) to the starter soleniod to make sure it is not touching the large red wire.. if it is ok, than try removing the relay before connecting the battery.. if it still cranks, it may have an internal fault with the starter/solenoid. if it doesn't crank, than problem is with the ignition switch or a remote starter(if equipped)

Usually one is small enough to fit on the small terminal and the rest fit on with the battery cable.
The small purple wire from the key switch goes on the terminal marked S.
You could do a continuity test and check it with the battery disconnected by checking it back to the neutral safety switch.

The starter on most cars is bolts to the transmission bell housing, along the engine. There will be a large normally a large red wire leading to the soleniod usually connected to the starter. A smaller trigger wire also leads to the soleniod.

Battery postive (red) to one of tow large posts other side to starter. Red small wire to small threaded post marked "S"

Loking at the starter soleniod with the small terminal(s) facing you the large terminal on the left goes to the battery and the other to the starter. The small terminal onthe right takes the cream colored wire with the red stripe.

On the battery side should be the blk/org (alternator wire) and yel/blk-w/fusible link with of course the positive battery cable, On the other big terminal should be the other yellows, for your small terminal marked with an "i" should be the red/blue if it has the small terminal, if not on the big terminal opposite of the battery.

This sounds like something is amok in the starter, disconnect the small wires and test again with the battery hooked up. IF still an issue, replace the starter, if the starter not activated, check wiring to the starter soleniod for faults or crossed wires.

I am not familiar with the model or the modification. The relay is required to act as a switch to relieve the load on the igniton/starter switch and the stock wiring. The starter switch now switches on the relay instead of operating the starter directly.

The relay contains two parts - the switching contacts and the relay coil or electromagnet that when energised pulls the switching contacts together or apart depending on design.

For use as a starter relay a standard 4-pin relay would be suitable but a 5-pin could be used without detriment leaving one pin unused.

The wire from the ignition/starter switch will be used to energise the relay coil and therefore switch on the current flow to the solenoid. In order to energise it must be part of a circuit and so current must flow through the coil from the ignition/starter switch and then to ground - the thin black wire is traditionally the ground wire for the relay coil, but you will need to check this yourself.

In order to switch a good supply of current to the starter soleniod the relay switching contacts are connected, one to a battery supply and the other one to the soleniod S terminal. The battery supply could be from the battery or from the large stud terminal of the soleniod. If from the battery or other remote place best practice would be to ensure a suitable fuse is also included. While the relay coil ground wire is traditionally thin the battery supply and solenoid wires traditionally are fairly thick.

Sometimes a relay has a helpful circuit imprinted on the cover. Many relays can easily have the cover removed and once you see inside the way it works becomes failty obvious.

so did this problem just happen or did you do some wiring repairs??. on a 1977 the only solenoid should be the fender. I dont have a wiring diagram that old. if it just happened there is a small wire on the solenoid on the fender, unhook this wire, and see if it happens again. if the starter does not engage then you may have a ign switch problem, if it still engages then the solenoid is bad.
