I just bought a 94 940 turbo 132 K miles.runs greatit sat for 4yrs!But aftre the oil was changed it started to smoke alotit also has alot of back presure. Also has alot of smoke coming out of oil filler cap when removed.iunderstand there is afilter or something in the crankcase vent system. Could this cause the problem.

The gauge could have a loose connection behind the dash. You can monitor oil pressure manually to verify.

Hello, how many oil leaks does this Volvo have? Also, are sure that you are loosen all the oil in a week. There could be other porblems with you Volvo. Does it smoke from the exhaust system, and what color is the smoke? Let me know, GB....stewbison

first thing on a turbo, do an oil change using full synthetic oil. If you can, plan on replacing plugs and plug wires, replace antifreeze, and check brake linings. VW Beetles are tough to work on (little room), and it would also be a good idea to check hoses and belts, cleaning the engine.

General rules of thumb: Low speed engine on acceleration with smoke in the exhaust plume = worn piston rings High speed engine accelerating (spooled up turbo) with smoke = oil form turbo bearing and/or piston rings Engine on over run (coasting down, foot off the gas) with smoke = oil from valve guides. VW/Audi make good engines with tight tolerances so none of the above should apply at 62K miles; just make sure that the oil (the right oil) and oil filter are changed regularly.

As you described the problem I'm afraid it shows a problem with engine piston rings, the engine itself is burning oil and the part you are talking about is called PCV, they can cause problems but not as severe as you described. You should have the timing belt changed between 90-100K miles. When you are having the belt changed you should also change the water pump rollers. The total cast would be $950.00

No different from any other oil change, just reset the oil life on the dash if it has one which i believe it does. The oil grade is 5W-30 on the turbo engines and 10W-30 on the non turbo engines. If you like you can go with the synthetic oil which will give you up to 25,000 miles or 1 year before service, but you do have to replace the oil filter every 5,000 to 7,000 mile and top off the synthetic oil which in the long run be cheaper then changing the oil and filter every 5,000 miles or six months for turbo and 3,000 to 4 months for non turbo engines. Turbo oil seal is probably bad. This lets oil leak into the air intake from the turbo bearing. If smoke goes away during hard acceration, then this is probably your problem. Turbo replacement or rebuild is the fix for this.

There are a few different things that will cause you to destroy turbos. It is very important that when you change the turbo you also change the mesh filter inside of the banjo bolt in the oil feed line to the turbo. This filter tends to get filled with sludge if you are not changing the oil enough, using poor quality oil, or if your turbo has gone bad, metal get stuck in this filter. Also make sure there is no metal pieces left in the oil feed line or any where else in the system.

You may also want to look into getting a turbo timer. This will give the turbo adequate time to cool down after driving, reducing the chance of warping the turbo.
