Ok still tryin to figure this jeep out. 4.7 which has a loud tickin or tapping sound that grows with acceleration. checked all the rockers and the hydraulic lifters and all seemed fine. is it possible the its the a/c compressor? dont know how many times i listened around with a long screwdriver but alot and always end up at the top of the a/c compressor. i can hear like a knockin at the top of it consistent with the revs and the compressor prolly didnt have any refrigerant in it for a couple years. i realize sound transfer, but dont hear it at lower part of a/c or any surrounding spots that are connected to the block since i figure if it was internal ya should be able to hear somethin maybe even louder or more distinct but nothin. its puzzling me, never would think a/c could make a noise that loud and consistent with engine speed. sounds like very very loud lifters but its not. i had changed motors since last one was bad and even the bad one had this noise along with a spun bearing but put the original a/c unit back on so thats why im leanin towards that. so guess im askin if this is posible?

took belt off a/c and seemed to help so prolly had 2 noises combining to make it more difficult on me lol. now left with a definate valve tapping sound. i know i checked them all, but unless they are stuck or froze up...how do ya tell between good and bad ones then?

I would remove the belt from the A/C and run the motor and see if the noise is still there.

You don't have to have the belt on for the truck to start and run, to charge the battery with the alternator, run the water pump and power steering, you do. You can remove the belt, start it up and run the motor long enough to determine if the noise is still there. I wouldn't try to drive it, just listen to see if the noise is still there.

Well, at least you know now, kind of a process of elimination. Most likely 1 or more are stuck, or not holding oil pressure and collapsing, since they are hydraulic lifters. If it's not too much money, I'd replace them all while you are in there. To test them properly, a machine shop would have to do a bleed down test on them, to see if the hold pressure.

Yes, that's the best way to do it.

I have a 93 Mits Express Star Wagon with constant loud tapping noise when accelerating high but not when idling. Any ideas?

Is the tapping slow and regular or is it fast like a machine gun? Check the obvious stuff first! Check each wheel arch for anything out of place. Do the same for the underneath. Slow suggests a possible drive shaft or a bearing. Fast could be tappets or rockers in the top of the engine. A more detailed description of the noise would help.

Have a 2006 chrysler 300, 3.5 with loud ticking noise during acceleration, also experiencing loss of power. Replaced both rocker assemblies and performance improved but ticking is still there.

sounds like bad valve seats or seals do you have a oil pressure gauge on your dash.check the pressure.then check your return ports on top of the head thats giving you the problem see if the oil is returning to the oil pan.sometimes the return ports become blocked and the oil stays on top of the head.and see if the oil supply is making up to the head.hope this helps.mark

Tapping noise

rocker arms need adjusted gap is too wide . the increased rpms make it noisy. stp would muffle it but it needs the gap set cause if you really rev it hard something up top can let go from the slapping of the rocker arms on top of your valves

A loud ticking noise?

No I would not chase to the pistons, these vehicle were very comon in creating HLA noise hydraulic lash adjusting valves, meaning the valves pump up with oil as the oil gets thinner they dont pump up as fast and create a very loud ticking noise, I would not express a great concern over simplicity, dodge was famous for this, they really were.
