Sounds like carbon build up in the combustion chambers remove cylinder heads and clean combustion chambers ,or timing chain slaping the cover
I would remove the belt from the A/C and run the motor and see if the noise is still there.
You don't have to have the belt on for the truck to start and run, to charge the battery with the alternator, run the water pump and power steering, you do. You can remove the belt, start it up and run the motor long enough to determine if the noise is still there. I wouldn't try to drive it, just listen to see if the noise is still there.
Well, at least you know now, kind of a process of elimination. Most likely 1 or more are stuck, or not holding oil pressure and collapsing, since they are hydraulic lifters. If it's not too much money, I'd replace them all while you are in there. To test them properly, a machine shop would have to do a bleed down test on them, to see if the hold pressure.

took belt off a/c and seemed to help so prolly had 2 noises combining to make it more difficult on me lol. now left with a definate valve tapping sound. i know i checked them all, but unless they are stuck or froze up...how do ya tell between good and bad ones then?

so whats the best way to prime the lifters before installin the new ones? do i submerge it in clean oil and move the top up and down so oil gets in there?
