Check this proceduto about how to replace a Brake Drum (DIY Complexity: Moderate / Time: 2.1 hours)

Parts:
1. Brake Drum

Tools:
1. Jack Stand Set
2. Mallet Hammer
3. Flat Head Screwdriver
4. Floor Jack
5. Combination Wrench Set
6. 3/8 in. Drive Ratchet
7. Tire Iron
8. Socket Set

Supplies:
1. Brake Cleaner

Steps:
Step 1 Secure the vehicle on a level surface, making sure the vehicle will not roll or lean when jacked up.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.

Step 2 Remove the rear wheel hub caps (if necessary) to gain access to the lug nuts. Using a tire iron or lug nut wrench, break loose the rear wheel lug nuts but do not remove.
o Tip: Turn the lug nuts counter clockwise to loosen. If the lug nuts are too tight, use a breaker to gain more leverage.

Step 3 Using a floor jack, lift up the rear of the vehicle.
o Tip: Using an aftermarket floor jack, instead of the original equipment (OE) jack, can make the job easier and safer. Verify the condition of the floor jack before use.

Step 4 Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. The pinch welds or the frame rails are the two best locations. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.
o Tip: Try to find a flat, level, and strong surface to put the jack stands.

Step 5 Remove the lug nuts. Remove the rear wheels.

Step 6 Remove the brake drum by pulling it outwards.
o Tip: Make sure the parking brake is released before removing the brake drum.

Step 7 Visually inspect the brake drum for cracking, scoring or grooving. If any of these conditions are found, the brake drum will need to be resurfaced or replaced.

Step 8 Visually inspect the brake shoe linings and drum brake components for damage or wear.

Step 9 Replace worn components if necessary.

Step 10 Install the new or resurfaced brake drum.

Step 11 Reinstall the wheel. Torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specification.

Step 12 Remove the rubber grommet from the backing plate. Insert a screw driver into the slot and turn the star wheel adjuster to adjust the brake shoes out.
o Tip: Turn the star wheel adjuster until you feel a slight drag while spinning the wheel.

Step 13 Road test the vehicle.

Hope this help (remember comment and rated this).

Sometimes the back drums are hard to get off. Hit between the lung studs with a sledge hammer "Don't hit the lug studs" keep working at it sooner or later the drum will release. Careful don't hit the drum to hard you might break it.

I just wanted to add one small detail to what ZJLIMITED stated, the brake drums on all vehicles coming off the assembly line have small round metal spring steel clips securing them onto the rear axles, I suppose it aids them from becoming loose and falling off on the production/assembly line.
If you dont remove these clips which are afixed to the tire wheel lug studs you will never be able to pull off the brake drums.
Take a pair of electrical **** pliers and cut them off and throw them away as they will never do anyone any good once the vehicle is off the assembly line.
Happy Motoring!!!

The rear drums are held on by a spindle nut. You first must remove the dust cap then unstake the nut and remove it. Behind that is a retaining washer and the outer bearing. The bearings can become a little stuck in which case a hammer can usually persuade them to loosen up.

SOURCE: 2004 Chevrolet Aveo Brake lights not working

A couple of days ago my brake lights on my 2004 Chevy Aveo wouldn't work, so I attempted to remove the lamp covers to check the bulbs. Also, before this my shifter would get stuck in park and could only be released by pressing the unlock gadget next to the shifter. Back to the brakes...Well, you open the trunk and remove the two screws just like the manual said, but it was very hard to pull off. There's 2 prongs holding the other half of the light on. The lamp will come loose by prying it (very hard). You think the cover will break, but it'll come loose. The bulbs were all OK.

After much frustration and internet info, the STOP LAMP SWITCH, GM#96436331 ($9.30 at Chevy dealer), which is located under the dash and has contact with the brake pedal, was defective. Once replaced, both my brake lights AND SHIFTING problems were cured. So if the brake lights suddenly don't work or you have problems getting the vehicle out of park, check the switch by pushing the prong (end that has contact with brake) of the switch in and out. If it doesn't retract smoothly...that's the PROBLEM. Good Luck.

Cant get the break drum off of a 04 aveo

Sometimes the drums are a press fit to the rear axle look for two holes on the out side of the drums if they are there you can get bolts that will thread into these holes and that will back the drum off the axle If not look on the back of the brake mounting plate the thing the brake shoes are attached toYou;ll see a rubber plug on the bottom take it out Most cars with drum brakes in the rear have a system that self adjusts the shoes every time you are backing up and hit the brakes Look inside the hole that you took the plug out of and there will be a gear inside its called a star wheelturn this wheelwith ascrew driver up or down depending on witch side of the vehicle your on one turns left handed and the other turns right handed so turn it so it gets losser This will release the force on the drum and it will come off with ease good luck

I have a 2004 chevy aveo. the rear driver side brake is locked. can not turn tire. how can I get the drum off. am having a lot of problems

you are going to have to access the hole in the back of the hub with a screwdriver and back off the self adjuster.

The inside of the drum looks like the below pic. The adjuster is the long horizontal cylinder above the axle. It has a gear on it. Stick your screwdriver in and turn the gear until the drum loosens.

What is the secret to removing the rear brake drums from a 2004 Saturn Vue?

Once you have the rear wheels removed and the back of the vehicle safely supported, then inspect the drum.If there is (there might not be) shiny brass looking phillips head screw bolts on the face of the drum, then remove those by turning them counterclockwise. If there is no screws, or you already removed them, then your next step is to take a fairly heavy hammer( at least a 2lb ) a firmly hit the face of the drum to shock it loose from the hub assembly.Be careful not to hit the studs , you can damage them.Keep on with the forceful hits on the face of the drum, and alternate the hits across from each other on the face of the drum.Make sure your parking brake is not set and the drum can come off...I hope I could help!!! Rate me accordingly...Thanks.

Passenger rear wheel locked up, 2004 Chevy Aveo LS, person said parking brake was stuck.. coiuld it have frozen that way?

This also happened to my 2004 Chevy Aveo. The drivers side rear wheel locked up when it first got extremely cold in December 2009. I had to change the rear wheel cylinder because it broke. They also found the rear wheel bearing also had to be changed. GM charges $180 for 1 rear wheel bearing. To make matters worse I had to order the whole backing plate which came with the rear wheel cylinder and a whole bunch of hardware.
If you look in the GM manual it says that you should flush and change your brake fluid every 24 months. My mechanic told me that moisture normal wrecks the brake cylinder. I'm not sure what happened to the wheel bearing but from now on I'll make sure to flush my brake fluid every 24 months.

How do i remove rear brake drum

To remove the brake drum you'll have to try and coast the car to a stop where ever you plan to do this. If you stop using the brakes the shoes will not retract all the way making it very difficult to remove the drum. Do not set the parking brake either as this will cause the shoes to prevent the drum from sliding off.

Raise and support the vehicle
Remove the desired wheel
Use a rubber mallet from behind the drum and knock it off.

If you intend to replace the shoes and do not have a service manual I suggest you use the other side as a model when installing the new shoes.

Brake drums

Try using a hub puller. I used one with sucess on my 2004 Aveo. The Aveo has studs that are installed in the brake drum (rather than in a hub behind the drum). I used a hub puller with arms that bolted to the wheel studs with a center screw that drives down on the spindle (visible after the drums dust cap is removed). Remove the cap and the spindle nut, install the puller, and a few turns are all that are needed to pop the drum off.
