I have a 2000 Hyundai Sonata, around St Patricks day we drove it home and it died when we got there so we figured the alternator was bad, so we replaced that. Then we started getting poor engine performance i.e. car back firing. We took it to a shop today and according to their computer cylinders 1 and 3 are not firing at all, but they couldn't find any root cause. I was wondering if there was a relay controller for this? Does anyone know where i can go from here? by the way we replaced the MAF already also

try this! start vehicle, while it is running remove the negative cable from battery. if it stays running the alternator is good. make sure battery connections are clean and tight. if checking alternator at battery, and you know its charging. then it has to be a short in wire from the alt. if the engine dies when testing as above. its either a bad alt, or a bad wire. or bad ground. good-day!
Battery is too low to turn the engine over. Get it jumped and drive it to AutoZone. They will run a free diagnostic and tell you whether it's the battery or the alternator.
I would recommend you take it to a shop and have the alternator tested, or take the part off the car and have it bench tested in a store. You may also have a bad fuse or fusable link between the battery and the alt.
if you want to try it yourself, i would highly recommend getting a haynes auto repair book at a local auto parts store. around $20. it will give you step by step instructions. also, if you take it out, you can take it to an auto parts store and have them test it to see if it's bad. most do it for free.
It could be. If it dies and then wont start unless you get jumped off, it could be your alternator. If it starts right back up then dies again it could be a fuel system problem. If thats the case, have a fuel pressure test done. It could be a vacuum leak or possibly a bad fuel pump.
Not the battery. Once the car is started, a bad battery will not cause it to stop running all of a sudden.
For engine to run you need - compression, air, fuel, spark.
Might want to check out your ignition coil for an intermittent condition - try replacing it.
And if it does not turn over(crank) check the wiring going to the starter motor, solenoid, for good connectivity. And make sure that your fuel pump is always getting power and pumping.
What's the difference between 'CRANKS" or 'TURN OVER'? Do you MEAN the engine cranks (turns over) but WONT start? If this is the problem, then there are NUMEROUS possible causes (i.e., fuel pressure (fuel pump) Bad Gas/Petrol, Ignition, Air Flow, Cylinder Compression, Crank Position Sensor, vacuum leaks, Nut behind the steering wheel, ECM, etc. An alternator belt would not cause the problem you describe. Take the vehicle back to the mechanic you replaced the belt and tell him to fix it!
You've made the correct decision. Let the dealership diagnose the issue. They'll tell you EXACTLY what the problem is and what's needed to fix it (parts, labor, tax, time-frame, etc.).
