Mechanical issue with the idle speed control system, most likely sludged up.

it is probably out of water as mine did that and the radiator was dry. due to a bad water pump.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Check the throttle sensor and MASS air flow sensor. Throttle sensor cheap check first. MASS nice penny.

First of all, your speedo is probably a result of something they forgot to do, at transmission, such as hook up sensor or cable. Are you sure you didn't notice same feeling before that repair?
When was last tune-up? What engine?

There is a warm up valve on the throttle body(should have 2 small coolant hoses). remove the valve and have someone start the car while you block the port to the valve on the intake. If that clears up the problem you can cut a piece of cardboard to mount in between the valve and intake.should straighten it out.
