There should be an electric solenoid on the side of the transmission that controls overdrive, if it is not the cause then the friction plates inside the transmission will need to be replaced.
Ok there may be transmission diagnostic trouble codes that do not turn the engine light on..If there are none...the problem may be torque converter clutch solenoid ...this is located in the transmission...drivers side behind the side pan...fair sized job..
CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FUSE.IT CONTROLS TORQUE CONVERTER LOCK UP SOLENOID - PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE - 1 -2 SHIFT SOLENOID - 2 - 3 SOLENOID.IF FUSE GOOD YOU NEED A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE.

Is the engine light on?? sometimes a engine trouble code will prevent the transmission from going into overdrive..The computer takes some preventitive measures sometimes...
