hi thanks for the reply with regards to the escort 1.8 1997. I know you said they did not m ake one but it definatley is :) The diagrams on the link do not match my car. I have the zetec dohc 1.8 engine with absolutley no markings on the camshaft. The other problem I have is I timed it up and now it wont start, its cranking quite oddly and very slow then stops and starts clicking. Any ideas please

Click on the following free, direct LinkS. It has all the Timing Belt Diagrams you will need, complete with Instructional and Directional Diagrams to set your Timing.
To my knowledge the 1997 Ford Escort only had a 2.0L not a 1.8L.
The 1996 had available the 1.8L and 1.9L. I could be mistaken - my apology.
In any case:
The 1st Link is for the 1996 Ford Escort 1.8L
The 2nd Link is for the 1997 Ford Escort 2.0L
Compare/use.

After sending, I remembered about the 1997 Ford Escort with the 1.8L Mazda Engine. If you would have included in your original question the specifications of DOHC and the Zetec part, I would not have sent you these Links, as they are SOHC. But as stated in my orginal answer: "my apologies".

Your Camshaft Sprockets do not have even the "E" or "I" on them?

If this is the case - you are looking at exposing the Camshafts and using a alignment tool (on the far end - away from the sprokets) to align the Camshafts.

I will not violate copyright laws, that is why I have you go to where the information is.

In 1997 Mazda had the 1.8L in both the Miata and Protege Models.

I am not 100% it this will help you...

Click on the following Link. It is for the 1997 Mazda Miata 1.8L DOHC,

    http://www.2carpros.com/car_repair_infor...

Given the situation: your marking of 2-Thumbs-Up is understandable, but forgetting the Zetec and DOHC - this is "vitual mechanics", and that information is very important for us to make the correct diagnosis-we do not see what you see.

But "2" is still a bad-mark. These Ratings are our only "payment" we receive for our time and efforts....no money!

If you want to change the 2 to a higher - I would appreciate it.

Most importantly is getting your vehicle fixed, but I have to have all the information inorder for that to happen.

    Thanks...Let me know...

    Pat

Seting timing on transit 2.5 1997 on bottom end

pump setting is 8ºbefore tdc used to be a mark on pulley wheel when i built them engines in dagenham in the early 70s ,if no mark visable set crankshaft keyway to the top of the engine and its on the slant remember ,think rheir is a mark on the flywheel now for common rail injection .We used to use a sort of tool that fitted over crank end then we turned it to lock against something which meant the keywaty was pointing to the top of the head and the engine was on a carrier so it sat upright .memorys ,best one was the night shift canteen ,better than a lot of resteurants i have been in since ,real genuine currys and west indian food anywhere

Confirm that the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the TDC mark on the front cover (arrows)

A sticker located on the timing cover identifies the timing marks and also shows the 0 degree mark on the crankshaft pulley

Timing in my car off

looking at the front of the engine the no.1 cylinder is the first one closest to the front of engine, if it is in a V type layout, then it is the closest on the right side. You should be able to find tdc by looking at the marks on the harmonic balancer. You also have to be sure that it is on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke.
