02 kia sportage suddenly died on highway at full speed. No sputtering, no surging nothing. Just dead. Turns over and tries to fire but won't. I have replaced, fuel pump, fuel filter, relays (main and fuel pump more than once), I have switched out ecm with a known good one and am stumped. Checked grounds, timing and spark ...all is good. I have gone into the fuse box under the hood and started testing the circuitry. In the fuel pump relay I have power going to the black/red wire(hot all the time), red/blue wire (o2 sensors?) and the dbl green wires(when ignition is on;they go to crank and camshaft sensors.)I also have a single red wire that goes to the ECM. It gives a slow, faint glow and also ''clicks'' when the test light is on it. The only wire that has no power out of it is a single blue one that goes from the relay to the fuel pump fuse, which in turn heads to the fuel pump via a green/yellow wire. Why am I not getting any power to the fuel pump fuse via the blue wire coming from the relay?????

I checked the timimng belt and conductivity on the green/yellow wire running to the fuel pump. I figured out I'm getting a bad ground to the fuel pump relay (red wire). Once I run a direct ground from battery to relay(red wire), everything fires up. My only problem now is that the fuel pump will run forever and won't cut out. Is there a seperate pressure switch for that or is it in the pump itself?

checked timing belt and no problems.....This model of kia DOES NOT have a fuel shut off switch as far as i know and I have recently fired up the vehicle by squirting gas in via the air intake. fuel pump is running (because I jumped the relay ground from the battery) but vehicle will only run on the fuel injected in manually. I can use the gas pedal and get the rpm's up as it is running but dies as soon as the fuel runs out. I am lost....

I looked and did extensive research and found out that there is no switch. It uses a relay connected to a main relay which is in turn fed by the ecu. I am at a loss....

I had the same thing happen to my 2002 Sportage, I had carbon buildup on the valves. Check compassion.

hang on a minute their is a fuel cut off switch somewhere for emergency use in case of an accident ,it shuts the fuel off ,Now where it is on this vehicle i dont know buit try looking under the bonnet for a small electrical block/switch looking thingy with a red rubber cover about an inch square and push it down .If it clicks down then you will find it should be alright again

all vehicles that require a certificate of homogolonation in europe have to have this safety cut out ,?? but its possible it doesnt have one in other countries .if its the earth not connecting then use a relay running off the ignition switch with the other connections makiing the earth so that it turns off when key is turned off.Personally i would take the sender unit out of the tank and have a look in case the gauze filter in the bottom is blocked or a plastic glove is swimming around in the tank ,wouldnt be the first i have found in the tank ,you know the ones they supply in the gas stations ?

There is a check valve/fuel cut off behind the right rear wheel on the sportage, this could be at fault

sorry for delay in answering but i have been busy and i dont always feel like sitting on computer ,
Now what i think is the problem is that a lot of vehicles use the earth to break the supply via the immobilisor ,i know ford use this system so rather than mess around i would grond the pump at the rear of the vehicle ,then where the supply turns the relay on i would disconnect this supply and run it off the ignition switch .

-Check breath line (vapor line), it might be bend. Tha's why it spill gas when refill.
Q: What is breath line and where is it...?
A: It's a small tube line above the filler line that along with the filler libe to the tank.

2002 kia sportage fuel pump needed replacing so we did and now car won't go

There maybe an air lock in the fuel line.
Try pouring a little fuel down the carby and then start the engine, you may need to do this a few times until the air lock is cleared.
