The door light switch is bad. The switch is part of the door latch assembly, and must be replaced as an assembly. It cost about $175 from volkswagen, and takes about 1 1/2 hour to replace. Buy a Haynes manual. It will explain to you how to replace it.

SOURCE: I have a 1999 VW Beetle, and the interior lights

ah, This is a very common VW issue. Hopefully yours is just gunked up like mine was. i just fixed mine today. here's how...

1. open drivers door, put key in ignition and turn to "run" position (this so you can hear the dinger)

2. trip the latch in the door so it clicks TWICE locked, you'll see.

3. now at the bottom of the latch there is a void you've exposed. Get a Can of contact cleaner, or brakecleaner and HOSE under the latch piece. I mean firehose the hell out of it for a bit, then open and close the door a dozen times or so to work the latch.

4. Repeat as necessary. Plan to use up at least half a can. I had it running out of the door drains. Hopefully this frees up the gunk that probably has built up.

5. Regardless if this does work or not, finish up with something like a few good shots of PB Blaster, WD 40, or some light lubricant. Maybe it will work free over the next day or so.

If this unfortunatly doesn't do the trick the switch might be physically broken. Either spend $170 on a new one or google '$3 vw door fix' if you feel like MacGyver.

Need copy of fuse location card for 2000 VW beetle. Can you send a copy to me. Thanks, Bill

The fuse panel on 2000 VW Beetle is located behind a plastic cover on the driver's side end panel of the dashboard, door open. See pictures below:

VW 2000 New Beetle door sensor/car alarm goes off when doors open.

I found a thread - http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1542461 that details the repair of the soldering on the key lock door module. Our 2000 new beetle had the same issue. Also sometimes it refused to start. Soldering pins fixed it all.

Also see http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1015107 for releasing window from track, And door handle from inner panel.

I ripped the door apart and re-solderd the pins. I only had one pin with cracked solder but two others looked thin so I did them while I was in there. It's about a four or five hour project if you have all the tools. (8mm triple square also called an 8mm internal was the hardest to find - Also needed Torx T8 T10 T15 and T30 plus Philips Screw Driver. )
Project is difficult but not too bad for the mechanically inclined. A 7 on a scale of 10.
Since re-soldering pins - no more issues! My guess is that a VW dealer would get $200 for a new moduel plus 5 hours of service time for this gig - easily a $500 to $1000 bill. My cost - several new tools - about $25.00.

Drivers window wont open

the door panel has 2 small screws at the very bottom of interior panel, another 2 screws behind the pull handle<will need to be pryed apart at the seams of the pull handle, then pull out on panel to release several push clips around the panel then once panel is loose you will need to reach around the panel and disconect latch handle and electrical connectors.
