You need to test the pressure, if the vehicle works by pouring fuel into the intake area, the ignition system is working. Sometimes a pump will just make noise, not actually put any pressure out.

You could remove the fuel filter & see what type of flow you have, but it's pressure more than just flow that you are concerned with.

The fact that you can hear the pump, is a good sign indicating that other factors are working properly, otherwise it would not run.

Good Luck

Possibly an your IAC (Idle Air Control valve) This is my opinion take it at face value.

There are slight differences between the 3.0 liter and 3.8 liter.

also if you say you have checked the pump also verify the injectors are fine.

What would make a not start unless I pour gas into intake

Hi Clyde:
Since you mention "gas rail" I'm assuming fuel injected.
I'd check the fuel pressure in the rail. Should be around 40 PSI.
If pressure is OK then injectors not working. Time to check cps.
You know the spark side is OK since it will run.

Why won't car stay running unless I keep pumping the gas pedal

Sounds like a fuel pump issue. Check the pressure from the fuel pump.

96 tahoe . It will not crank up unless I pour gas into the throttle body . Once it cranks it will run untill I shut it off but want crank by itself . Why

First, lets be clear with terms. To crank is to turn the engine over, you can do this manually with a wrench on many vehicles. It requires no spark or air. To turn over or to fire is when you achieve combustion. Example: You could pull the spark plugs on a vehicle and turn the key and it would crank, but it wouldn't fire or turn over.

Now it sounds to me like your vehicle is cranking but not firing unless you pour gas in it. My first thoughts are fuel system. I'm assuming it can't be fuel pump because it runs once it fires. Perhaps the fuel pump isn't priming itself, or perhaps somehow air is getting in the line between the injector and fuel pump? Test the fuel pump first by turning the car from off to on (not starting, just on). You will usually hear a short buzzing noise coming from the engine bay that stops shortly afterwards, that's your fuel pump pressurizing the line. (Pro Tip: If you ever try to take your key from off to straight to start and the vehicle doesn't start on the first try, but does the second time no problem, try delaying at on for a moment before trying to start. This gives your fuel pump time to pressurize the line.) Assuming your fuel pump is charging the line, the next place to look would be at the path the fuel takes to the throttle body. When you crank it over and it doesn't start, are you getting any fuel? If you can't see where the fuel enters the system try smelling the exhaust while cranking without it firing, if it smells of fuel you're good and need to look at air flow and spark, if not it's a fuel issue.

Past that, I'll leave it to someone more experienced than myself, but that would be how I troubleshot my own vehicle.

Hi, my 99 suburban starts then dies after 2 seconds. It runs when gas is added to the intake for as long as I pour it in. The fuel pump is new, and works fine. Pressure is good. the pump stays running...

"the pressure is good" doenst tell anything, if it isnt at least 60psi, its not enough to open the injectors. Its time to have a shop look at it, the rich o2 sensors may be because gas is poured in. Scan data needs to be checked while engine is off, cranking and running to diagnose the problem.

I ran out of gas and refueled now car won't start. Any suggestions?

when u run the gas tank empty it severly overheats the electric fuel pump inside the gas tank, this tiny pump depends solely on the fuel flowing around and through it to lubricate and cool it so it won't overheat, you have seized up the fuel pump, u can let it cool for an hour and make sure the pump is totaly immersed in fuel before retrying that means u must put in at least 5 gallons of gas.

93 wrangler 2.5 will crank but won't start. I pour gas down the #1 cylinder and put the plug back in and it will crank for about 8 seconds then sputter to life and idle and run fine. Shut it off and try to...

Yes...check the pump, filter and output. Also check the ballast resistor for the pump. Stop pouring fuel into the cylinder...instead, use carb cleaner and spray into throttle body (excess fuel in one cyl will contaminate your engine oil). If it runs normally after you get it started likely the pump is good (unless you have problems at high rpm's under power) Regulator is likely good as well...default is to more fuel not less.

1997 Safari will not start unless carb cleaner sprayed in air intake. runs after this. Confirm spark and motor rotation.

Have your fuel pressure checked.Sounds like pump or relay is out or fuel filter restricted too much.Remove the gas cap and put your ear to filler neck while someone turn's the key on,you should hear the pump running.pump run's for about 8 second's to prime fuel rail then shut's off till cranking.
