I have a 1997 olds cutlass supreme and have no brk lites

I have a 1997 olds cutlass supreme and have no brake lights.I do have the small center light though. At times the brake lights work.I replaced the brake light switch and still have the same problem. Is the brake lights tied in with the ABS system?I noticed 2 switches under the dash, one is the brake lite and the other I don't know. Can anybody tell me if they know of this problem and help me with the brk lights. Thanks

Sounds like a bad or loose ground wire, it would be located in the trunk near the tail light assembly, the other switch is for the cruise contro, it's what cuts the cruise when you hit the brakes.

Only top lite comes on for brake lites checked all bulbs and fuses

this problem is caused by the turn signal switch being being defective, the brake light circuit for the lower lights runs through this switch, it is a common problem on may GM cars in these years.

They are unrelated. Just make sure your brake release is fully relesed. The switch turns the light on if the release isn't against it fully.

Abs light is on

youre car needs to have an abs diagnostic work up done on it to get a trouble code and to go futher with a repair. on a cutlass the brakes will feel fine with the abs light on but they will not divert brake pressure in the event of a panic stop thus causing a wheel to skid.
good luck. chris

Brake lights

There is a micro switch at the top of the brake pedal that activates the brake lights when you depress the pedal. This switch likely has to be replaced. Any mechanic can do this in about 15 mins.
