Power steering problem

Check under hood for power steering belt damage.

Check for power steering fluid leak on the floor

Check high and low side power steering hose for damage (crack)
Check the component(s) adjacent to the PS pulley and hose for sign for PS fluid.

Top off the ps reservoir and recheck for leak(s)

This indicates an issue with the power steering system. First, locate the power steering fluid resevoir under the hood. Then open it and check the fluid level. If that is low, check your vehicle manual for the correct type of fluid to add. Also, take a look at the belt that goes around the power steering pump pulley-If the belt is loose, or otherwise in bad shape, It will make a squealing sound as it slips on the pulley. If the vehicle has a serpentine belt, or one belt that winds around all the accessory pullies and is loose, the serpentine belt tensioner may be failing. If none of these things are present, the problem most likely lies in the power steering pump itself, and it will need replacement. Good Luck!

Probably one of the other belts. A bearing wouldn't just screech for 30 seconds. Could also be the power steering pump low on fluid.

Hi B, There are basically two places that can make a noise from the power steering; one is a loose belt which will produce a loud screeching sound which will become more intense when the steering wheel is turned. That one means that the belt has stretched and should be replaced or re-tightened. The second type of noise will be from the pump and will mean a replacement or at the very least a repair job (if the repair kit is available). Replacing the fluid is not a great problem. Locate the reservoir and the low pressure pipe which returns the fluid into it It will came from the steering assembly. (a rubber pipe attached with hose clips. The high pressure feed pipe will connect to the steering pump).Get a large container, which must be at least four times the capacity of the replacement fluid, You will probably need in the region of seven to ten pints, maybe more.. Join an extension hose to the return pipe and run that into the catchment container. Be prepared with the replacement fluid and ask a friend to start the engine. As the engine starts, begin filling and keep filling. The used ATF will run into the catchment container and when it becomes clean cut the engine. Reconnect the hose to the reservoir and check that there are no leakages. Regards John

check you power steering fluid level, little black cap under hood look in front of engine down around fan belt Chevy or GMC usually on left side. if fluid level is OK the possibly you need a new power steering pump

If the screeching sounds high pitched it could be a serpentine belt which would indicate it needs replacement.
If it's lower pitched the power steering pump could be low on fluid which will lead to replacing the pump if left long enough. To check the fluid look in the operator's manual and search for power steering to locate the reservoir and to determine which fluid to use. If you cannot find that search around under the hood for something indicating the power steering reservoir. If it is completely out of fluid you may have to remove air from the system by disconnecting the return hose and extending it with a clear hose which drains into a nearby container. Start the engine and begin filling the reservoir, turning the steering wheel side to side until no bubbles are seen in the hose. Stop the engine and replace the return hose.

I would recommend a mechanic or friend to help you in either case.

The flashing oil light means oil pressure is low. Check the oil level and add more if it's low. If that doesn't resolve the problem have a mechanic check it out.

a tie rod or ball joint needs either greese or to to be replaced

Put on a full lock if ot screeches then the fan belt is loose just tighten it or replace if needed O.K. ?

If you look under the hood look where the belts are. A compotent that the belts drive or turn is your power steering pump, when you find it you will see a cap that you can remove and check your fluid. Also with the problem you describe check the belt and the tension of the belt. Fluid level and belt tension are the most common causes of power steering failure. The power steering cap will be marked to make it easier to find.

sounds like it is out of fluid if you fill the fluid then turn the wheel to one side and hold it you will build up pressure and see where it leaking from.
