check to make sure the pump shaft is not broken and there is no kinks in lines.

PLACE PLASTIC BAG OVER ALTERNATOR TO KEEP FROM GETTING POWER STEERING FLUID IN IT.WILL DAMAGE IT.USE A SIPHON REMOVE ALL POWER STEERING FLUID IN PUMP RESERVOIR.THEN REMOVE REMOVE BOTH POWER STEERING HOSES CATCH WHAT FLUID LEFT IN THE POWER STEERING PUMP IN A DRAIN PAN UNDERNEATH THE VECHICLE TRY NOT TO GET POWER STEERING FLUID ON CAR PAINT IT WILL REMOVE CAR PAINT.AND POWER STEERING FLUID IS DANGEROUS.ITS A NEW KIND TRY NOT TO GET ANY ON SKIN OR CLOTHES WEAR LATEX GLOVES WHEN HANDLING IT.

Power stearing cap gives you the number/grade of oil to use. Better yet go to Auto parts store and read the fluid container lables. one will probably say for GM vehicles

I'd be first confirming whether you have a 1.6 litre Grand Vitara (petrol), or a 2 litre turbo diesel. The 2 litre petrol (straight 4 or V6) or 2.5 litre petrol engines are all chain drive.
If your engine is petrol then no lock tool is required (to hold the camshaft). Of course, there is a specific position that an engine should be rotated too before removing the belt from ANY engine.
If it's diesel, then although I'm unfamilar with that particular engine, the general requirement for diesel engines with high pressure injection pumps is "yes, you require a lock tool" to hold the injection pump pulley. As I think these are a common rail set-up, this requirement may not be necessary. Check with your Suzuki Dealer, or maybe someone else here will know more. A similar question may have already been asked and answered here too.

I don't know off hand however if you ahve your maintancebook and service book it will tell you the kind of fluid car uses and the proper amount it takes. Alsoif all else fails use your HAYNES MANUAL. Yes you should have a Haynes book if you have a car. IMO if you have a car, you need a haynes for it. Good luck my friend.
