The overdrive on my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee is turned off. How do I turn the overdrive on?
SOURCE: 94 jeep grand cherokee will not shift into overdrive
My 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee was doing the same thing. I changed the TPS ( Throttle Position Sensor) Now it is great goes into overdrive fine. It is really easy to change.

Could be a valving problem in the steering box or a binding ball joint etc. Try jacking it up and see if you can find anything that's binding (usually you can feel roughness or hear some noise in the bad part). You may want to disconnect the steering box at the linkage on the pitman arm to isolate the box from the remainder of the steering gear. I can't offer a "cure" only because there are too many parts to check and any one can be binding. So, instead, I'm telling you what to look at so you can find it.
