2004 Taurus My extra key would not start the car and has not been used for months because of this problem (it would crank but not turn over) so I went to dealer to get a new back up key made (two days ago). Yesterday my original key would not start the car anymore even though it did at the dealer when I left, the new key did work so I only used it the rest of the day. Today the new key started the car on 3 separate occasions as I was out running errands. Upon returning home I tried the original key and it did start, but now the new key will not start the engine. It cranks and cranks but will not turn over.

Need to take it back to the dealer so that they can program both keys correct. there should not be any more charges for this being they did not do it right the first time.

check immobilizer for correct operation. check fob key battery for charge. run fault codes and check for cam/ crank position sensor fault. Check that the cam shaft is actually turning ( broken timing belt)

Ford Taurus being a ********

Lets start at the beginning.
You say it cranks but will not start, right ?
The warning lights are supposed to come on with the key on and then go off once the engine starts.
If the engine cranks but will not start, someone will need to figure out if it is lacking fuel to the injectors or spark to the plugs, or something else. One way we check it is to look for spark at the plugs, check the fuel pressure, and try starting fluid in the throttle body.

2004 ford taurus wont start after being driven a short distance, running fine before i turned it off

If Th engine doesn't crank have the battery and battery cables checked for condition and corrosion. If the engine cranks and dos not start then have the systems control computer scanned for fault codes and have the fuel pressure checked.

My car sat idle for about a month but I had a friend start it occasionally to keep the battery up and running. One day the engine would not turn over when he tried to start it up. The lights come on like...

yeah, try starter fluid just to verify if it;s fuel or spark related. If it starts or tries to, then it's a fuel problem. You should be able to hear your pump turn on, when you turn key on, may need to stand by tank, when someone turns key on. it should activate for about 2 seconds, with key on.(that's to pressurize your system with gas) then when cranking, the pump should run(may not hear it then-so just listen when key is initially turned on. No noise: your pump may not be working. If you can hear the pump, it may be another issue.

I have a 2005 Taurus SE. For the last few months now on a cold start, I must turn the key on but not thru to start until the bells and buzzers quit, then turn it to start; other wise it will just crank...

this is just a sugestion and in no way meant to answer your problem, but this sounds suspiciously like the the problems that used to occur with the neutral saftey switches on the older taurus.

It takes a few tries to start the car. the car cranks, I turn off and then on again, may crank again before finally firing.

Sounds like a fuel problem, turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump to run, you should hear a humming noise for a few seconds then it should stop. The pressure regulator could be weak/check valve or injectors may be leaking by and causing fuel pressure to bleed down. Any other drivability issues/problems.

2004 Taurus will not crank

Does it crank with a jumpstart?

If so, then have the belt to the alternator checked. Do you make short trips? It may just take that long for the battery to discharge enough to not crank the engine.

Will not start, battery good, checked all basics.can problem be with anti theft and key

Thanks to everyone for your ideas.

Turned out it IS a bad key. In answer to the symptoms --- no sound whatsoever when you try to start it. But the theft light on the dashboard blinks very fast when you try to start the car with the bad key. We did test it by using the good keys and then the bad key several times. The bad key NEVER started the car - the good keys always did.

A couple of weeks have passed since then, and no problems.
