Loud clicking noise and black smoke...

I have been having a "stop to go" problems on my 06 Jetta TDI (172,000kms). When it's time for me to go from being in a stop position, I step on the gas, and the car moves slowly. There is a loud clicking noise coming from the front and lots of black smoke coming from the exhaust. So I take my foot off the pedal quicky then re-apply my foot on the gas pedal and the car goes. I have had all my filters and MAS sensor replaced, nothing seems to work. What are your thoughts...

ACTUALLY, I just found out that my fuel filter hasn't been replaced 110K. Could this be the problem?

Seems like an injector and valves. Check if all injectors are giving same pressure, none leaking or damaged, the injector pump working fine and all filter in the pump are clean (yes there are small filters inside under every electro-sensor), get valves gaps checked and adjusted. at this kind of mileage its a must.

Blocked fuel filter would not create black smoke from exhaust as this comes only when too much fuel is in the combustion chamber. A blocked fuel filter would rather make the car to lose power, and if it was not changed for 110k than your car would have problems starting at all.

2006 Volkswagen Jetta TDI 1.9 BRM engine. Vacuum line trouble shooting.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

Oil, air filter and fuel filter are nothing to do with your issue. If it 'revs through the roof' and doesn't move, your issue is a burned out clutch or a problem with the automatic gearbox.

You can trace vacuum leaks two ways.

The cheap way. buy a 3 foot length of 1/4" plastic hose and stick one end in your ear. Wave the other end around and follow the noise.

Take it to a garage and they do a smoke test. They pressurize the system with a smoke generator and see where it appears from. The test takes a couple of house on a slow leak and 5 minutes on a big one.

sounds like the turbo could be going bad, did you check air filter? Black smoke generally means your not getting enough air to burn fuel.

1998 vw jetta tdi did not shut off

The air plate is not shutting off the air to the intake manifold or you are getting oil into the intake. Check the flap on the end of the intake where the black boot connects to it. You could have a vacuum leak or electronic issue not sur with out looking at it.

Could be broken rings or crank shaft bearings slipping.
Get the compression checked and that will tell you either you need an overhaul or another motor.

I'm shooting in the dark but that's what it sounds like----I think with all the pollution factory issues this should be covered by the MFG. Another is blown head gasket but that would show coolant in oil or vise versa. GL

Was on freeway and lost power. trouble restarting but no power and a lot of black smoke and some slight knocking. Left two black soot marks under car at rear and behind turbo or exhaust manifold, car has...

If you have a lot of black smoke then its over fueling getting to much diesel to the cylinder's. Sounds like an injector problem with the slight knocking noise. Che ck the return pipes are not blocked. If the smoke is dark brown then this is a problem with the valves on the intake manifold which control's the intake of exhaust emmisions.

My jetta 4 1.9 tdi smokes and no power on mornings ends on 60km/h but after leaving it in the sun for 1 to 2 hours it run well again

When was the last valve adjustment?
An old timing belt and T-belt guide will offset the timing.
Can a shop do a compression test on the engine?
Do a motor flush before the next oil change to free up the rings and clean out the head.
This is the inexpensive method to restore compression.

If it's the org. engine it will has over 80,000 miles on it.

It's normal to has the valve stem seal/oil seal on the head to leak oil into the cyclinder.

The smoke you see is the motor oil drop from the seals.

It land on the top of the cyclinders and it create black smoke at start up.

The inexpensive fix is to start using high mileage oil with seal conditioner.
This will help soften the rubber seals and help reduce internal oil leak.

The correct fix is to wait until it's time for a head gasket replacement and let the professional service the head.
Complete head service is the only method to stop this internal oil drip problem.

2001 jetta tdi auto. only runs 345 miles on a full tank of diesel

the catilic converter may be clogged. this could b.e the reason for the black smoke .it could also cause poor fuel mileage .you might try removing it and see if the black smoke stops .if it does change it and your fuel mileage should improve
