1999 ford explorer 2x4 4OHC AT transmission problem

1999 ford explorer 2x4 4OHC AT

Transmission does not grip / slip in D and 1
in position 2 it works perfect - over 25 KMH it works in D too
no problems in shifting when rolling
at speeds below 25 KMH something kinks out
and only works when in 2 to start
reverse is okay

NO warning lights - except once the "overdrive off" light blinked intermittendly - with was resolved with restarting the motor. Cannot get a code-check here at this time every shop closed till January.

  • w_m_a Jan 01, 2010

    HAD THE CODES CHECKED -NOTHING

seems to me rather an electric problem
can still drive - did so over 200 km by now
no noise from the transmission it seems to work fine except for the start in D or 1 position
is there an electric connection that needs to be checked
they only tell me I need a "new" transmission.....
without really testing what is wrong - yeah

Is the chech engine light on? If so see if there is a p0700"s code. Thatr is for the trans only and will help diag. the problem you have.

SOURCE: 1999 ford taurus transmission

Your problem is the speed sensor. The VSS (vehicle speed sensor)

is located on the right side of the transaxle, near where the right side axle shaft

connects to. To access this part is pretty tricky, if you are inexperienced. There

is an aluminum foil covered shield around the wiring connector. You will need to

remove the shield to gain access. You may even have a damaged wiring

connector, that is causing the problem due to the close proximity of this part to

the catalytic converter. If you want to purchase this part from the Ford dealer,

ask the parts counter person for the "basic" part number 9E731. Hope this helps.

If Drive Selector switch is properly aligned then a shift silonoid might be the problem.

SOURCE: CLUNK NOISE WHEN SHIFTING IN REVERSE FORD EXPLORER

You may have a sticky forward solenoid or lots of slop within the transmission, drive line U-joints, sloppy differential(s), or worn CV joints . Have someone watch and listen while shifting the transmission back and forth (brakes on!).

SOURCE: 1998 ford explorer is having a transmission slip

Shift solenoid is typically WHEN to shift, not slipping.
Bands and fluid are slipping (and sometimes pump).

Cheap test, remove old, install new fluid... test.
If it works - congrats.
If not, AAMCO or other transmission place for a real test.

SOURCE: my 2002 ford explorer transmission shifts hard

Check engine light on? Sounds like a bad pressure control solenoid. If it is a bad PCS. You have to replace the solenoid block in the 5R55W transmission.

1999 ford explorer, previous owner pulled the dash off and replaced lights for dash. Now there is P0781 code error - 1-2 shift error with probable cause poor connection at transmission, open or shorted...

It could, but not likely. There are shift solenoids inside the transmission that are controlled by the TCM (transmission control module) See if there are any connectors in the wiring harness that may not be fully engaged or not reconnected before exploring the insides of your transmission.

Replaced 2 3 sol in trans goes forward in all gears

Transmission gear assembly and transmission needs inspection. Also check the transmission fluid level. Also is the fluid getting leaked or its low.

I would like too know is it possible too hook a 1999 ford explorer 4x4 4.0 v6 transmission 2 a 3.8l ford v6,if so will some 1 let me know wat changes to make ,an wat years are compatible?

A 4.0 transmission will not hook up to a 3.8, the bellhousing bolt pattern is different. It is possible though, that a machine shop could make an adapter plate to make your combination work.
