I am assuming you have a 4-speed transmission?
There are 2-speed sensor on the front of the transmission. Input and Output Speed Sensors.
They are level with each other, right above the top line of the Solenoid (wiring harness goes into this box-like assembly) The one that is closest to the Solenoid is the Input Sensor. The one (at the same level) towards the left side of the van is the Output sensor.
I believe a 1-in wrench will work, after you unplug the sensor. Torque going on for both is 20 ft-lbs. Before replacing the sensors - you may remove the sensors and clean the metal particles off the interior tips of the sensors and reinstall and check operations.
Let me know if this helped, or if you have additional information or questions. Feel free to contact me at fixya.com

What is wrong with my 1992 Ford Econoline Van while i was riding down the road i noticed the speedometer stopped working and it started changing in and out of gear hard and eventually started slipping and...

Possible v.s.s (vehicle speed sensor).this sensor is located at the tail shaft of the transmission.this would also cause shift pattern concerns because p.c.m doesn't know what speed the van is going.there's a plastic gear on sensor that sometimes apple cores (wears out in the center of gear, taking the shape of an eaten apple, this would result in gear not moving.

The trouble began by my van not shifting out of 2nd care... van had gone into limp mode. Shortly there after, the engine light came on and my van started to overheat. We ran the codes and got PO720,...

Hi,
The codes you gave are:
P0720 = Output shaft speed sensor error P0731 = First gear incorrect ratio Replacing the Output shaft speed sensor should clear that up and help your transmission. Around $20 or so. The limp mode is probably caused by a faulty cam position sensor or crankshaft position sensor. Overheating: Did you verify that your cooling fan is coming on? Kicking into a higher speed with the A/C on? Thermostat of the correct heat range and installed with spring end into engine block? Coolant is not rusty looking or weak? (check specific gravity) Flush and refill system if not nice and green or orange/ is rusty looking. Water pump is circulating coolant properly? (open radiator and observe circulation, feel top hose for fluid surging) if not, bad pump. Any of those will cause overheating. Hope that helps! Please rate this answer.....Thanks, Mike

There are 2 Speed Sensors on that car. One is accessed from the front of the engine and one is accessed by removing the front driver's side wheel and then the access pannel in the wheel well.

Where is the speedometer relay in a 1996 chevrolet van?

There is no speedometer relay. The speedometer input is provided from the vehicle speed sensor that is located in the tailshaft portion of the transmission.
This input is also used by the power train control module (or PCM) and is used as an input for transmission shifting.

Does speed control senor make transmission not shift into

Hi...
If the speed sensor Not work on a Automatic Transmission.
The over drive will not work.
The over drive is a SENSOR Located inside of the Transmission.
On vehicles with 3.0 liters.
On vehicles with 3.3 0r 3.8 liters, Is Part of the selenoid pack.
But if you have a 3.3 or 3.8 Liters.
Most cases the transmission will not go up shifting.
it will Stay on 1st or 3r.

If your van is a 3.0 liter , I will recomend replace the speed sensor.
Located At Right side of the Trans. on the firewall side.

if you have 3.3 or 3.8 liters.
I recomend replace the Input and Output shaft Speed sensor.
Located at left side of the Transmission. Behind the Selenoid Pack.

The first step I recomend Is get the Vehicle scaned with a Diagnostic scan tool.
To know exactly what is the problem.
Is there some autoparts That do scan on vehicles with no charge
Just a Complementary service.
Advance autoparts, Autozone autoparts, Pepboy's Autoparts.
And some Napa Autoparts.

OK. I hope this help on your problem.
Thank you for use fixya....

Top speed is 45 mph

this particular year and model has problems with the transmission module. before you go on a whim... make sure your van is shifting gears. when the module goes out it will stay in second gear and not shift to other gears. watch your rpm's to see if it shifts with your speed. if the rpm's dont drop and just continue to advance your transmission is not shifting. the best option if you are not a home mechanic is to take it and have a diagnostic done. there is also the possibility that your input or output sensors are also bad. which also controls when your vehicle shifts and the speed. another thing to look for is if any of the plugs have bare wires and are grounding out. i hope this gives you a place to start..........
