You don't say which model volvo you have, but you should check under the hood on a V70. If you have an S80, there are 3 boxes, one in the engine compartment, one in the trunk, and one in the passenger compartment near the driver's left leg.
If the car has a cig lighter, you may be able to use a trickle charger plugged into the lighter socket.
Or you may be able to connect jumper cables to the starter from under the car.
Not familiar with your car, but when the battery is in the trunk, they usually put a positive jumper cable connection under the hood. If it is in there, it will have a lid on it with a plus sign on it.
Failing that, you can use one of those lighter socket trickle chargers.
Either one will power your car so the trunk lock will work.
I had the same problem with my 2001 s80 my battery went dead and it just stopped working me and a friend looked at every fuse even all of the relays and the relays under the fuse box in the engine compartment but to do that you have to remove the battery terminals so when we were finished checking everything we connected the terminal and started the car and everything was back on I'm assuming that the computer or something needed to be reset.
Sometimes you can let down the back set of a Volvo and get into the trunk. Some trunks are equipped with a trunk release to open it. See if the back seat will let down.
I f it is like the XJR, the cig lighter is electrically switched and will not work. Find the hot point and and ground in the passenger side heelboard. The ground is two wires together scewed to the body an the hot point was a bolt attacted to a large wire and covered with a black rubber boot.
