I get a low rattle/groan from the right front during acceleration. Fades as acceleration ends to no abnormal noise while cruising or braking. Sometimes a low rattle/groan at idle, especially when not in between stops on the Parking gear. No noticeable impact on mileage, handling, braking distance. 96 Chevy Cavalier 185K Mi.No, replacing the car isn't an option.

Duh! I forgot that 13 years ago they still made normal cars with stick shifts. It's an automatic.

(In response to Solution No. 1, which is really a clarification request): The engine is a roaring 2.2L.

Could be the exhaust heat shield has come lose from rusting over the years. Without more diagnosis it is hard to tell what the noise is. What i have suggested is just a common rattle from under the car. Need more to diagnise effectively

Hi R,
If I understand correctly the sound you're describing could be something known as 'pinking' It occurs when the ignition timing is too far advanced and can damage the engine. Make sure that you're using the correct octane rated fuel in your vehicle and thereafter take it for a tune. Whoever does it, should set the timing at 10 degrees BTDC. To set the timing correctly, open the diagnostic socket in the engine compartment which when standing facing the front of the car will be on your right and the vehicles left. Open up the cover and bridge between T and E1 (A small directory is inside the same cover, which will help you find the correct connections) Only when the bridge is connected can the ignition timing be set correctly. This should be carried out with a strobe timing light with the engine running.

will try to assist you. did you have your clutch replaced professionally? if it's a popping or cracking sound when accelerating or turning, it's most likely a c.v. axle going bad. either on driver or passenger side in the front of the car right?if it is a bad c.v. axle it will pop and crack when you turn wheel from left to right at low r.p.m. if not this, you may have brake issues. either it's a grinding sound while accelerating or decellerating,as long as cars in motion the noise will persist.try tapping your brakes while in a parking lot in slow gear, hear something from driver front, have a passenger with the widow down on passenger side, hear it from front passenger side? the thing i go by is what i hear when i test drive to diagnose an issue with a vehicle is,axles?popping and cracking when turning the steering wheel from left to right at low speed. [axle problem] grinding, scraping sound? brake issues! hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com and we are here for you 24/7 7days per week thank you!!!!

Check and see if the Brake Pads were re-installed with all the hardware, ie, Anti-Rattle Clips, shims etc. if your pads are not secure in the Calipers it will cause the pads to rattle when you are driving in effect causing your brakes to make weird noises, ie, groaning, squealing, rattling.

check your upper control arms, does it happen when you step on the brakes or just when driving, you might need a balance of all your wheels or the tires you have could be bad.

Rattling Coming from Engine At low RPM (stopped) and when accl.

If this sounds like a tin can rattle it is likely a loose heat shield on top of the catalytic converter. They come loose after time and corrosion take their toll.
