Yes you most likely need to overhaul the tranny.

Most likely a faulty engine temperature sensor. Sounds like it is stuck reading you engine at normal operating temp and not cold.

idle control valve problem plugs fine ,ask a local mechanic to check it out for you though unless your motor vehicle technician these things can be a bit complicated to say the least

It sounds like the water pump belt under the timing belt is broken or the pump is not circulating the anti freeze the way it is supposed to.Did you replace the water pump, water pump belt, and timing belt when you replaced the head gasket? If a vehicle is over 100,000 miles it is recommended to replace the water pump while doing the timing belt just because the pump is such a pain to get to under the timing belt.
