How to access the tail light bulbs above the back seats (next to the rear window)? I need to replace the light bulbs, but could not find out how to access the light bulbs. Thanks for any help.
Re: How to access the tail light above the trunk? I
You must slide the entire high mount brake lamp unit to the left( pass side) and lift straight up. unplug the wire and remove the unit, it will be easier to change the bulb this way. make sure you use the correct bulb or the warning lamp will not go out.

1) Open trunk
2) Remove small round plastic access panel with a flat tip screw driver by prying open
3) Remove flat tip screw holding tail light assembly
4) Remove tail light assembly by pulling outward, careful not to break plastic guide/nub
5) Disconnect wiring connectors
6) Remove plastic housing access plate on back of tail light assembly by twisting/turning tabs until they click and then lift access plate from tail light assembly
7) When viewing the the bulbs, the turn signal bulb is the bottom left bulb
8) Install in reverse order, ensuring tail light seal seats properly during installation

Some bulbs can be changed without removing the tail light. First check to see if there is an access panel in the trunk trim near the tail light. If there is, you can twist the turn signal socket counter-clockwise to remove it from the unit. If there is no access panel you will have to remove the portion of trim blocking the tail light. This is usually held in by a few small clips. After it is removed you can follow the directions above.
Lastly, some models have to have the tail light removed to change a bulb. The bolts will either be behind the trunk trim or on the inside edge of the tail light.
Once the bulb is changed just reverse the steps to put it back together.
Good Luck!!

The Tail Lights Are Accessed From The Inside Of The Trunk There Will Either Be A Panel Immediately Behind Where The Light Is Or Carpet. Remove It And It Will Give You Access To The Rear Of The Bolts Just Grab Twist And Pull And The Light Will Come Out.
remove the trim panel at the very rear of trunk, remove it and place it out of the way, remove tail light Assemblyretaining nuts top and bottom, I think there are 6 per side, pull the tail light assembly straight back to access the bulbs for replacement.
Usually all you have to do is pull back the inside trunk liner behind the tail lights from inside the trunk, or there may be a plastic door that you open to access the tail lights. The wires going to the tail lights connect to a plug that you turn counter clockwise and pull out from the back of the tail light assembly. Once you have removed the connector replace the bulb. Some light bulbs just pull straight out of the connector, others you may have to push in and turn counter clockwise to remove.
If you are still looking for the resolution, it's really pretty simple. It is highly recommended that you remove one light assembly at a time, thus allowing you to have a good guide when repositioning the assembly back on the vehicle body. Yes, the only way to get to the burned out bulb in the taillight is to remove the whole darn thing! The bulb burns out every 4-5 months, so I have become good at it...Here goes:
1. Open trunk. Look for small (3" diameter) cutouts in the fabric panel in the trunk liner. They are identical and appear next to the taillight assemblies, on the side, not behind the taillight.
2. Gently use a flat blade screwdriver and pry them open. These cutouts are attached to the inner trunk liner fabric, so be gentle.
3. Notice the phillips head screw inside the opening. Unscrew it slowly, making sure it doesn't drop between the chassis and the trunk liner. Remove the screw.
4. Place soft towel on the outside of the car under the taillight assembly, to prevent scratching the car bumper.
5. Gently grab both sides of the taillight assembly from the outside and pull away from the car (rear direction. Be careful not to pull too hard, or the wiring harness behind the assembly may break.
6. You can now access all lamp in the taillight assembly. Change the bulbs as needed. Also, if you can vacuum or clean the dirt on the chassis as well as on the back side of the taillight assembly, you'll feel better later :-)
7. Placing the taillight assembly back in its place is a bit tricky. It seems to go back easily, but the rubber lining nearest to the trunk opening and where the phillips head screw is, must be placed exactly right or water will leak behind the assembly.
8. Screw in the phillips head screw, but don't overtighten it. You will need to open it every 4-5 months to replace another bulb (its an Audi-VW plan to sell more bulbs).
9. Snap the trunk liner caps back in place and voila, you have done it.
